Yeah, sadly the whole world is full of sad people that complain all the time. I can't actually believe people take the time to write letters to tv stations let alone flag avatars.

Boring. I'm sure is like to go for a pint with that guy....

And there is nothin wrong with the infidel one either.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I honestly don't understand what the objection would be. I think the infidel pic makes a strong statement on the rejection of some(some. I said some!) Islamic countries' treatment of women, and resistance to the influence of radical Islamic terrorism. Surely that isn't a bad thing.

If you're offended by that, you kind of deserve it IMHO.

I guess I don't see all opinions as valid.

Being offended by what is clearly a slap at backward and savage cultural practices that brutally oppress women is an example. I'm not trying to be a dick about this, but if I'm being honest that's my feeling on the subject.

Man a lot of stuff happens while you're asleep. Well there's nothing to suggest that, that particular picture is a slap in the face of radical Islam. Being from a middle eastern, Islamic family, I immediatley think of the typical crusading American army coming in with a flagrant disregard for cultural values such as modesty.

This is an unfortunate notion, that for the most part is not true but many muslim families feel this. It's hard to articulate, and as much as a cop-out as it is, it's easier "to get it" if you were raised muslim.

Also for what it's worth I never formally complained about the pic to a mod or anything.

Don't wish to develop yet another anti-islamist argument on Dakka.

Suffice to say that what you consider as an invalid opinion may actually have merit and yours is skewed.
That is not an accussation btw, but a possibilty.

Only an egocentric will consider his own opinions to have any validity.

What's immodest about that picture? Also, if you think that it was morally wrong to remove the Taliban and Saddam Hussein from power I'm afraid we're at a fundamental disagreement. I don't want to get into a debate on the subject, as it's far off topic, but suffice to say that if we disagree on that then it will be difficult to find middle ground on this.

The netiquette thing was a joke. Again It's hard to explain but you have a busty, blonde, in a tight shirt wearing some sort of army apparel and has a gun. It's difficult for me to articulate in one interent post an entire culture's, fears, apprhensions, and prejudices and I apologize for not being able to do so.

Also I don't see anything to suggest that the picture has to do with removing the taliban, which we haven't completely, but was a noble goal. Iraq is a different story.

I should note that I'm not completely torn up by this pic, it was more like I was scrolling through posts, saw it and went "that's unfortunate" I deal with enough annoyances off the interent so I can't go complaining to mods everytime I see something mildly annoying. Just the other day a man in the train station was wondering where I had hidden "the bomb".

On that note I don't mind discussing this stuff. Though I'm still not sure where you are drawing the idea that the pic is in opposition to radical Islam and somehow I am not. I cannot make you think something is not offensive but I am trying to explain why it bothered me.

Not sure I see any consistancy of your position on this.
Also again with the dismissive attitude to people that don't agree. The inference being that Asimo is somehow not tough enough.

which is being mean.
But then I guess I am also being sensitive, but that is just the way some people are. We can't all be tough cookies.

Actually, it would seem that I post too fast.

I get what you're saying, I you're right that I most likely don't understand your interpretation of the picture in question because of our cultural differences. It's a thought-provoking avatar, I guess. It would seem that the interpretations say more about the viewer than they do about the picture.

I don't think I said anything dismissive, and I really didn't mean to imply them. If he had thought that I was being mean, then he would have been being overly sensitive as I sincerely thought I was going out of my way to be polite while at the same time voicing an opinion that I feel strongly about. Since he said now that his statement was a joke I know that it wasn't the case and it is, as they say, "all good." At least on my end.

If people have come to a different conclusion as to what the picture represents, then it's no longer a matter of disagreeing since we're not even talking about the same thing. That's the crux of the issue, I think. He's not annoyed by the picture for the same reasons that I think it's great.

I also just want to throw in he should be allowed to have really any avatar pic he wants. Unless its in violation of dakka's policies, I have a greater respect for the freedom of expression than the respect of religion.

Funny thing about all this is I'm not even muslim (anymore at least, but I still appreciate some of the core values), but yet I still feel these threads of connection to the muslim world. I guess that's brotherhood or something. But, it's the same kind of feeling that for example makes one want to completely jump onto Palestine's side of the arguement in regards to Israel, before examing the facts.

I guess it's part of being human, it is unfortunate that it probably does cloud my judgment at times, but its hard to throw away a lifetime of being raised a certain way.

It is implicit. When someone states that another is being (over)sensitive the implication is that there is a weakness of their personality.

Some people are intrinsically empathetic or have different backgrounds, as Asimo has highlighted.
TBH I have always been in two minds on how to interpret that particular image, or more accurately, the motive for its creation and use as an avatar.

But again let us not go down that route please!

If one is thinking that someone else is being mean for simply disagreeing with them, they could be easily described as being overly sensitive. Since this wasn't the case, and it was all a joke anyway, I think we're fine.

Dakka has a very large user base (it isn't just 12 guys) and occasionally something like this will happen. Show a bit of maturity and deal with it. No one is required by law to be here and there are other forums where you can have much racier avatars if that is really what you need to get your rocks off.

Obliviously I am referring to the Avatar situation and not the goofy relativism/Islam argument going on.
