I would highly recommend these. Sandy Mitchell's stuff is good also. Not every author is to everyone's taste. but there is plenty of selection to be had.

I started out with the Cain series, and they really are my favorites. I just think 40K lends itself to comedy well.

Many book stores carry BL books. Borders and Barnes'n'Noble will be good places. and there is always E-bay

Whilst I am a huge fan of the Abnett books I don't only read his stuff gaunts ghost books are a good place to start however some of the newish Inquisitorial books are also very good, there's one with what looks like a grail knight on the front cover with shiny scale mail armour which turns out to be some sort of crystal that I found very enjoyable maybe someone can help me out with the title? Personaly I would buy straight from black library but thats mostly because I would like to see a greater percentage of the profits going to the people making the books having said that I have never bought a book I haven't already read the first couple of pages of in a book shop, if it hasn't grabbed me by the end of page 5 or so it goes back on the shelf!

Don't start with 'space marine' because everything else you read after that will not satisfy you at all!

Essential reading would be Eisenhorn, as already mentioned, Daemonworld and Storm of Iron.
To help you on your jolly way here is one of my favorite short stories, hope you enjoy

Farseer was a pretty good book by William King. Details some of the adventures of a rouge trader named Janus Darke. He is helping some Eldar fight a Slaaneshi Daemon Prince(who doesn't molest young eldar maidens, at least not in the book).
I don't know if it will be that easy to find, it was published in 2002... NM found it on Amazon: here
