The Eldar idea sounds excellent, and the Tomb World should be great as well.

A cool variation on the SM shrine could be a necropolis/cemetary of heroes. Imagine a table of rolling parkland, with occasional stands of trees, full of monuments/gravestones. With large monuments/statues/obelisks/sepulchers for LOS-blocking. You could also include a small shrine or two as buildings/ruins.

Eldar urban table, hands down.
A lava board isn't the best terrain to play on, but it's really cool though! Check out Menelker's board on these forums. Ballin'.

Duh.

I agree here though, and not just because it makes a nice pun. Ice tables always look like fun things to play on.

Were I any good at painting, I'd base my models on ice bases, even though most games we play are urban games.

Have to agree with this. Interestingly the above pictured snow table looks brilliant, simple but brilliant.

All the trench themes I've played on result in more awkward placing or more models falling over than staying stable, for the love of the throne think of the models. Terrain as cool as it is to go crazy and elaborate, it has to be functional first.

OK pictures are coming, I will be setting and photoing all my terrain for a tournament saturday (tommorrow at the time of writing). Because of this thread here is what I decided to do:

Eldar Terrain, Specifically an entire board of Dark Eldar architecture With Massive Warp Gates!
Ice world forest and crystal Additions
Lava World Volcanoes
Death world massive Jungle trees, on moveable bases
Generic tapered hills for multipurpose use

More to come, Im really glad I did the Dark Eldar project I think those pieces were the best of the varied efforts here! Thanks for the encouragement and perspectives!

My realm of battle game board is ice/ snow based. I`d post pics but have none of it currently. In saying that also it needs a lot of touching up to make it neat and clean again as its in a bad state currently

OK I built a Dark Eldar themed board after the comments here!

I was very happy with how it came out! Hope you like it!

Very sexy! Looks like some of the multi-tower pieces might be a bit awkward to get vehicles through, but they look so good one hardly cares. The aesthetic of the design is very evocative, and the paint job is sweet! Those hills are outstanding, too.

Funny thing, I'm right in the middle of converting some Venoms for my DE/Harlequin army, which should be hitting the table for the first time tomorrow!

It's very realistic but the arm and thumb sorta don't fit with the rest of the terrain imho.

Did anyone get to play on the table with the new DE at all?
That would have been good to see.
Apologies if they are there .

Augustus,

Nice work. Terrain seems to always be an undervalued part of the hobby. Some nice simple ideas used here and never can have to many terrain ideas. Are they candle holders?

Yes the thumb was very hard to convincingly model realistically....

Unfortunately I don't think a Dark Eldar player was ever playing on this table, that was my wish as well! It would have been good to see, I think we had 32 people, I don't think any of them were Dark Eldar players, sadly.

I totally want to see the dessert table. Is that anything like Katy Perry's whipped-cream bra?

OT:
I'm always partial to ork scrapyards personally. Though the pics of the gargant construction site that were posted here recently have given me another goal to work toward.

Gamewise, lava tables suck. Any tournament I've attended where there were lava tables, people hated playing on them. Can't we just save lava planets for Battlefleet Gothic games?

Good luck!

Wanted to give a shout out to you Alex, of all the great comments in this thread I thought this one had the best idea and the most meaning and I made the Dark Eldar terrain pictured here because I agreed with you and lots of people enjoyed it, and will in the future.

Thanks!

Awww, hey, I think they are so cool looking though, I mean doesn't everyone get tired of hunter green and sand yellow felt and want something flashy?

...but, I have to agree, almost EVERYONE who plays on one of those tables automatically assumes all the lava is impassable, or at least difficult, even though, I always intend it to be a regular board.

So from that perspective I can see why people might think 'they suck'. AT least I hope you dont think they look bad...

No, they look really nice. But there's something about lava that does imply that it's dangerous... And at the very least, the sheer amount of up&down to get in and out of the lava areas makes for a constrained game feel, even if you don't make the lava dangerous.

I would say any that clearly had invested time into it and is realistic. It really detracts from the game when my tactical is taking cover behind a stack of texts books or my rhino has to negotiate a coca-cola can....its like toy story or something.
