Hm, what I do for my own tactical squad:

Prime black.
Put grey basecoat for parts to be painted with a light color
Layer with Bleached Bone
Wash Bleached Bone with Brown Ink
Layer with Bleached Bone
Another layer of Bleached Bone to make it consistent
Highlight with white

For the silver/metallic parts, I basecoat with Boltgun Metal
Wash with Black Ink
Layer Boltgun Metal
Layer Chainmail
then layer Mithril Silver

For the gold parts I basecoat it Bestial Brown
Layer Burnished Gold
Wash with Brown Ink
Layer with Burnished Gold
then highlight with Mithril Silver

Now the details would depend on the model, but each and every detail has a minimum of two coats each.

One tac squad detailed like that would take me a week. Take note that since it's also my full-time job, I paint 5-8 hours a day.

...of course, depending on how much they pay for the miniatures, my client's minis will vary in terms of detail. Cheapest usually will take me a week for 20 minis.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

On my space marines I won't stop until I have details picked out in grey, than white. I also need three layers of red for shading the armor, and green lenses with a dot of white. Add charcoal grey to the ribbed joints and tubing, then a light drybrush of silver where needed. It usually takes me three hours to get a detailed marine done well. Less for the average tactical marine.

Tyranids I just do a single layer red carapace, yellow soft bitz and black skin. Red ink on the yellow and black to make a molten, red/orange look. The red carapace is purple inked so it looks beet-red. Then I just give them a dot of green on the eyes and pick out the teeth in bleached bone.

Dark Eldar, I do a black base coat and green trim, that's about it. I do the hair in reds or white with streaks of another color. Add metalics where needed and done.

Chaos marines are single coat, base with black then pick out trim in silver and gold.

My Blood Angels are the most lengthly, and my chaos marines or tyranids are the shorted paint job.

Chaos Marines 4500 points, 1000 points Daemons
Space Marines 1350 points
Tyranids 2000 points
Dark Eldar 1300 points

Chaos black under coat and dry brushing but in the end they just turn out

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.

I dont really have a formula I follow. But, my thoughts are.... we have spent enough money on these little toy soldiers that we ought to give every one of them our best effort. Otherwise it just seems like a waste of money But then again I will always paint rather than game.

Like all true art models are abandoned and never finished.
