Right, you do have to think differently to be a horde commander.

Instead of paying 55 points to protect 10 guys with AV12, you're spending 50 points to protect 10 guys with 10 other guys.

With transport-based lists, it's a little easier to distinguish the wrapper from the contents, as what you can't afford to lose comes on round bases, and the expendable delivery system comes on treads or wheels. With horde lists, you have to change your thinking in such a way where a certain percentage of the models which are killed is acceptable and just part of getting the rest of them to the objective, while a certain higher percentage means you need to start worrying.

Your one-stop website for batreps, articles, and assorted goodies about the men of Folera: Foleran First Imperial Archives. Read Dakka's favorite narrative battle report series The Hand of the King. Also, check out my commission work, and my terrain.

Abstract Principles of 40k: Why game imbalance and list tailoring is good, and why tournaments are an absurd farce.

Read "The Geomides Affair", now on sale! No bolter porn. Not another inquisitor story. A book written by a dakkanought for dakkanoughts!

Well said that man!

It's cost effectiveness too. For dark eldar the points gives you an albative hit, a lascannon and essentially a 15" move (+ fleet + charge). For marines... well do you *need* to be that close, do you need to be that mobile?
5th E is a lot about mobility so that's good... but running is also an option
