Great looking figs! I like the coherent look of the units, they look like an army not just some collection of random units. The shield look excellent too.

Hello chaps, I didn't actually paint these miniatures, but bought them second hand. They were marvellously painted and not that dissimilar in style to my own so I touched up the little chipped bits of paint, gloss varnished the booze bottles and re-based them for the army. even though I can't see me using them often they are fun and highly detailed old Dogs of War mini's so they couldn't be passed up!
Lumpin Croop's Fightin' Cocks
The infamous halfling trouble makers lead by Lumpin' Croop have only fought alongside the Garrison on one occasion. When the 4th and 11th Company, 3rd Regiment of the Alpenkorps and an accompanying 8th Squadron of the 1st Dragoner Regiment rotating back to the Black Mountains after a Beastman cleansing campaign in North Eastern Averland encountered the Cock's concealed in the woods not far from an overturned Supply wagon (containing a healthy supply of Rum and Sausages) being looted by a small warband of Beastmen driven South by the purge. After a quick strategy discussion with Lumpin, Feldwebel Mattheus led his Pikes down the path in formation with the Dragoons sent to out-flank the Warband. With the Cock's skirmishing on the flanks of the Alpenkorps.
Lumpin Croop's Fightin' Cocks
The skirmish was short and sharp, the well aimed arrows of the Fightin' Cocks riling the drunken Beastmen into an ill advised charge where they were pinioned by the Pikes of the Alpenkorps, as the Beastmen began to lap around the side of the small formation the Dragoner regiment galloped into the rear of the warband and at close range fired a close-range volley on the charge, then using their pistols and carbines as clubs trampled the Beastmen who routed instantaneously. After a short pursuit by the Empire troops they returned to the supply wagon to find it cleaned out and the halflings vanished, not a sausage remained.

Small update today, since i have been gluing together some of my IG that i have been neglecting. My standard bearers got their standards updated. The first one is an Empire shield de-skullified and a cloth bannerwith a bit of yellow on it from Pro-Gloria miniatures

Update time, this unit has been worked on over a month or so in-between other projects, but finished off this week. A unit of Poll-axe and Pike, Perry Miniatures and Crusader and the standard bearer and musician from the Braganza Besiegers DOW unit with a Pro-Gloria cloth banner. The army is really starting to shape up now. I have even started on my first character I will post up an army shot in the next update.
Now that this is done I am working on a new unit of Pistoliers, which was incredibly kindly gifted to me from a user on the WargamerAU forums so thank you very much again Salah!
I also have gotten a few choice items of DOW OOP stuff to paint up and show off in the near future.
Ost Averland Garrison Troopers in Attack Column
The attacking column is the principle offensive attack formation of the Mountain Garrison. In a battlefield situation the columns deploy behind the wide defensive blocks of the pikemen in line formation, ready to rush through the narrow gaps and attacking the enemy regiments head on or from the side, the defensive blocks then move up to support their comrades who have hopefully disrupted the enemy formations. The formation is ideally made up of the bravest and most aggressive soldiers, often younger new soldiers will volunteer for the attacking formations in order to win glory and recognition in battle.
Ost Averland Garrison Troopers in Attack Column, rear
Men in the column are armed with a mixture of weapons, the centre of the unit is armed with the traditional Pike, whilst the flanks and front of the formation are armed with the fearsome Poll-axe, these versatile weapons are much more mobile then the cumbersome pike and in the offensive lessen the weakness of the flanks of a Pike formation. As can be seen the armour of the soldiers in attack column is a bit more varied, some of the soldiers personally opting to gain mobility by discarding pieces of their armour, a soldier too exhausted to lift his arms will be killed weather he is encased in steel or not.
Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad
I am also going to take the chance to plug a game that shooter/history fans should check out (also for my benefit because I want to grow the Aussie community for it!). It's called Red Orchestra 2 and it's the sequel to my favourite FPS shooter. It is a more realistic and involving experience than the usual increasingly generic Battlefield/BadCompany/ MOH etc etc series. Lots of attention to detail and free content updates after the initial release! They also massively support the modding community and a Pacific Theatre mod and a Vietnam War mod are both nearing completion. Check out it's web page here if your at all interested in shooters, history or the second world war.

Now I know I mentioned Pistoliers in the last post, but the models I was gifted horses were a bit tatty, and so I have had to order some new ones in. As a result I have finished painting up some other stuff in the meantime while I wait for delivery. The model i have to do is a Mutineer miniatures Mortar with two Perry crewmen, one Assault Group Spanish miniature with a heads swap to a Crusader miniature. Plus gabions from the Assault Group
Ost Averland Garrison Mortar in Field Use
The Mortar of the Garrison is a standard field piece common throughout the Empire, in Garrison use these are placed on turntables inside the courtyards of the Keeps and Fortifications, where they can lob shells over the walls in the event of an attack or siege, whilst the walls and towers are reserved for direct fire artillery. In the field they are wheeled into position, and then set up and fired in the same way as any Imperial Mortar. The wheels are always removed before firing because the recoil forces pressing down would rapidly damage them
Mortar with Protective Gabions.
In the field as with the other artillery in the Garrison, the Mortars are more often used behind built defences, in this case some packed earth Gabions, built around a small mound, the Gabions provide protection from nearly all projectiles and enable the crew to load and fire from range with impunity.

You guys are hard to impress! 4 updates without a reply!
Another day another horde. Finally finished off the last big pikeblock. that's 3 units of 40 (well cheated a bit with the pavises) now done. Pretty pleased. 5 Pistoliers and 6 Characters then the army is at it's 2000 point mark and I will have it out for it's first ever game. (Also my 2nd ever game of WFB )
Alpenkorps Field Deployment
Deployed in the field in Line formation the Alpenkorps present a steady and reliable block of troops, ready to take on anything the Old World can throw at it. Although not as experienced fighting in pike formations as the men that make up the heavily armoured Garrison Troopers the average Alpenkorps trooper has a bit more experience in fighting simply as a result of fighting more frequently against the monstrous denizens of the Black Mountains. This hard edge of experience makes up for any deficiency resulting from less time spent in formation training.
Alpenkorps in Line Formation
The banner carried by the Alpenkorps depicts Shallya the Goddess of healing, watching over the soldiers and support staff that garrison the Black Mountains. Worship of Shallya is common throughout the frontiers of the Empire, her healing and protection being sought wherever hardship is present, and there is plenty of hardship even in the day to day lives when living in the Black Mountains. The banner is Resplendent in the Garrison livery of Red, White and Yellow. With a stylized helmet topped by an Imperial Eagle.

Hey dudes, Army is approaching critical mass, Pistoliers have begun production! Undercoated and ready to go!
Army shot tomorrow! All squished together on their table, once the characters are done then the entire army spread out.
Also have all my characters finally arrived and primed also ready to paint. 5 Horsies and 6 Characters for my 2000 point army, then they will have to take to the field for their first game!
These are my new horsies, pre-undercoat! A rarely seen WIP shot for my painting log.
Single Arc, Breech-loading Rifled Cannon
A highly accurate Rifled cannon of the Garrison. The twist imparted by the internal grooves on the Cannon turn the shot more accurately and force a good deal of accuracy upon the shot. Deployed in the field behind earthen embankments in the manner of the Garrison the crew can shelter easily against enemy fire and arrow.
Breech-Loading Cannon behind Embankment
The cannons powder is provided mostly from stores and factories in the Garrison town of Grenzstadt. The troops that garrison this village bring it up to the fortresses through the mountain passes that lead through the winding roads of the black mountains, these troops are often equipped with Handguns and the Grenzstadt Troops are usually the only forces that are utilized by the Garrison that employ these weapons. The supply of powder to the fortress is an endless chore, but in order to maintain the guns the supply line must be kept open.

Now the promised Army Shot! It's a bit crappy the light isn't perfect at the moment, and they are getting awfully squishy on my little end table there. But it feels good to see them all massing
I also have some really cool models for characters that need some painting, bet you can't guess what they are

And I am back! It's been about 9 months since I posted anything here, My interest in my painting goes up and down in waves, and there has been a low ebb for the past nearly year! But now the painting bug is back and I am feeling the urge to paint again.
Still a bit rusty but good to get this one done, it was one of the first models I put together for the army so it's really satisfying to see it finished. Hope you guys enjoy, some Cavalry or HQ troops coming up soon! We will see! I will use it as a unit filler or alternatively an objective, but it was fun to do a little diorama since I had a left over body.
Alpine Warfare School Jäger
Orcs are tough creatures, and it is not uncommon for them to be incapacitated instead of killed by weapons particularly the less destructive ones such as Bows, when this happens it is often useful to finish an Orc with a dagger or sword rather then potentially waste an arrow. Due to an Orc's resilience weapons designed for piercing armour are often more effective than slashing weapons, as a result vital areas such as the neck, eyes, heart or brain need to be targeted.
Finishing a wounded Orc
This Jäger is sneaking up on an Orc, it's spine severed by an arrow shot. Whilst a comrade distracts it from the front, he will reach out and yank the Orc by the ear, causing it to turn it's face towards him and exposing it's neck, a sharp stab to the throat and jugular vein will cause the Orc to die rapidly and means the Jäger won't need to puncture the thick skull.

Some old-school Pistoliers! These were very very kindly donated for free by Salah'Udin from the WargamerAU forums in Australia, so thank you so much buddy! Really appreciate that generosity and hope I can pay it back one day. Sorry it took over a year to get them painted!
The Question Mark figures are also being painted, and I will try to get them done next! I have a bit of an aversion to painting character models for some reason, the rank and file has always given me the most joy
These guys are on Assault Group and Perry horses, which are a little small for them, but in the unit when they are ranked up it's not too noticeable. But I still prefer that then the enormous GW plastic horses.
I have also updated the wounded orc with a drop of blood and a bit better photo.
Averland Pistoliers
The Averland Pistolier Korps follows the model as the rest of the Empire, young nobles earning their spurs to Knighthood or Political or military positions. The nobles who are drawn to fighting in the Black Mountains are usually adventurous trouble seekers, impoverished nobles unable to get favour and postings to softer locations, a small percentage also realise that they will easily see combat and a few battle honours are vital in advancing up the social ladder.
Pistoliers and the Garrison
The Pistoliers enjoy a cordial relationship with the soldiers of the Garrison, although usually only temporarily attached and used for scouting work when the Garrison is required to take to the field, or in the cases of large incusrions through the passes the Pistoliers have proven their worth in many battles. Friction does exist however between the young nobles and the common soldiery that makes up the bulk of the Garrison, but this bickering is typical throughout the Empire and is usually put aside in the face a greater threat.

Mystery Models! Most of them anyhow
Took a long time to get to these girlys, but now my Lord and Hero choices are almost done! These two models are from Dark Sword Miniatures, from the George RR Martin collection, these models are actually Cersei Lannister and a handmaiden, these existed a long time before the movies of course, so interesting to see that interpretation! Really great, slightly taller then warhammer guys, so i have trimmed down their dresses a bit, they are almost to scale now, still slighter taller. Great figures.
I will be using these two as Wizards, for the Celestial/Light colleges so on, another mystery mini will be another wizard.
Clerics of Shallya
Shallya is the Goddess of Healing, Mercy and Childbirth. She is an exceptionally important goddess throughout the Old World. People pray to Shallya all the time: when they are suffering from an illness, when they are hoping to have children, or when they are looking for forgiveness for their sins. The main Garrison fortress maintains a chapel to Shallya and her Clerics provide invaluable service healing and caring for the soldiers and the women of the Garrison forces.
Clerics in the Field
The Clerics march with the soldiers in the Garrison, tending to the wounded and sick, whenever they are available the morale of the troopers is much improved, knowing that their chances of survival from a wound is much improved. Not just through prayer but the Clerics are also trained in very practical forms of wound treatment and dealing with infection. They are not well trained in combat but the soldiers of the Garrison will fiercely protect the healer women standing in their ranks.

Hey dudes, here is part 2 of the mystery models, my Warrior Priests(esses) I enjoyed including some female warriors in my army, but blimey it is hard to find a fully armoured woman in 28mm! The first model (whose eyes i need to tweak a bit, they are a bit wild!) is from Brother Vinni's miniatures, some really nice models, small range but some nice stuff, big fan of his stuff and good scale for WFB with a Knights Panther shield and the second one is another Dark Sword Miniature.
I am not sure what is next, I am eyeing up something big and hungry or perhaps a little vignette with one of Brother Vinni's captured females hmm! Maybe actually finish painting my general might be a good idea Not sure if i should add something to the scroll. Might attempt it later!
Sentinals of Verena
Verena is the Goddess of Knowledge, Science, Law and Justice. Her symbols are the scale and the downward-pointing sword. Verena is generally portrayed as a tall and beautiful woman, dignified and serious, sometimes with a blindfold over her eyes, her scale in one hand and her sword in the other. The Sentinals of Verena almost exclusively guard the temples and holy places of Verena, however it is not unknown for them to take the field to fight injustice, oppression or the depravity of beastmen and orcs.
Verena's Temple at Grenzstadt
Grenzstadt the primary city and supply point for the Garrison maintains a temple in the town centre. The Sentinals their guard it and the local court. Occasionaly they will assist in escorting a supply convoy to the Garrison fortresses, where they will spend some time mediating with the troops over slights and altercations as well as providing counsel. The main garrison fortress is arbitrated by Sentinal Yngrid, who will act as a mediator in the disputes or occasional lawlessness that arises anywhere soldiers are garrisoned. In the case of large scale action by the fortress Yngrid will don her armour and stand with the men, inspiring them with a belief in the justness of their cause.

Hello chaps, got a big block of men to post up today, perry plastic Mercenaries and European Army metals. These guys were done a bit more hurridly than my previous ones as they were gotten ready for a tournament, which was my armies first ever battle as a completed army and the first game of the tourney was my 3rd ever WFB game. Needless to say I got thumped and the army will be undergoing a few new additions as a result!
I'll post up a report on the tourney next post.
Grenzstadt Pikemen
The town of Grenzstadt is the largest in Ost Averland and forms a vital supply and support function for the Garrison, as well as being the primary source of new recruits for the Garrison. It maintains it's own force of state troops separate from the Garrison forces, but still part of the defence network of Ost Averland. These troops are armed and equipped in the same fashion as state troops throughout the Empire and provide a solid reliable core to any Ost Averland force. When fighting in the mountains the troopers are led by reliable officers of the Garrison troops, whose expertise in the unique conditions is considered vital. When fighting in the field however the troops are led by their own officers.
Grenzstadt Equipment
The State Troops of Grenzstadt aren't as heavily armoured in general as the Mountain Garrison troopers, the majority of plate armour protection being earmarked for the mountains, that said, they are still well equipped, being equipped with maille, gambesons, sturdy helmets and any breastplates or plate armour available. The livery of the Grenzstadt infantry is a black and white tunic halved, with yellow hose.

My general finally! All the skulls stripped off, just the standard Empire Captain looks ridiculously ostentatious compared to my normal soldiers
Nornicle, the only current GW products are the Archers, the rest is either old GW Dogs of War or other historical miniatures, such as Perry, Kingmaker and Artizan. I use mostly GW paints with Vallejo also, I paint fairly slowly I think, although i turned out that block of 40 men in about 10 days for a tournament (from undercoat as they had been assembled a while ago). Just basecoat, wash, highlight, for the most part. Then eyes last. The whole army was started at the start of 2011, but I wax and wane in my enthusiasm for painting. My longest gap was about 4-5 months earlier this year.
Wachtmeister Johannes Klein
The title of Watch Master is given to the commanders of the Garrison fortresses. They are given to senior men with proven experience, often nobles but not necessarily so. It is a high-ranking position in the Garrison, second only to the Supreme Commander of the Ost Averland Garrison. Responsible for commanding the Garrison in battle and ensuring the smooth running of the fortress and the vital task of supply and logistics of the fortress.
Klein is an able commander, a large man with a keen mind and a strong grasp of logistics, and an able tactician in defence and in field battles. He is not a strong fighter however, and enjoys his food, meaning he has fattened up more than most in the Garrison. A minor noble, he feels compelled to keep up with Imperial Fashion trends, sporting large feathers and large puffed sleeves, including an impractical cape in battle, despite this he is respected in the Garrison for his tactical ability.

Hungry bellies ahead! Time for a little injection of Fantasy into my supposedly fantasy army These Ogres were not painted by me, I bought them second hand and they were lovely, not quite matching my style, and 5 strong, so i got another Ogre to make it nice and even 6... Couldn't help it. I don't even know if i will ever use them but they are nice models and will look great with the army.
Took me a long time to get around to these they needed to be re-based and touched up because they had lost a bit of paint over the years but pleased with how they turned out.
Golgfag's Mercenary Ogres
Possibly one of the most successful Ogre mercenaries of all time, Golgfag Maneater forged a reputation for the Ogres as fearsome killers for hire long before they became a relatively common sighti n the mercenary armies of the Old World. He soon found himself leading a bunch of almost equally brutal Ogre warriors.
Ogre Interaction
Ogre's are a rare sight in the mountains, as the food pickings are too slim for them to make the slog up the cliffs and valleys. As a result the Ogre's have never fought with the Garrison in their fortresses, they were once co-incidentally present at a small skirmish in the foothills after a drunken binge led to them perusing a small raiding party of Goblin Wolf Riders who had interrupted said drinking binge. This persuit led them into a group of scouting Dragoons of the Mountain Regiment. The resulting clash led to the destruction of the goblins and the consumption of two horses. Which the Dragoons graciously (or so they portrayed) donated to Golfag.

Galloping onto the scene, more pistoliers! I found these guys quite effective in my games, if needing a fair bit of finesse to get the most out of!
Next time i plan on writing up my tournament report, I got a thrashed a bit, so I have been re-forming my ranks into column and planning some hammers to go with my anvils.
Military Technology
The eccentric Engineers of the Empire are famed for their bizarre and ecentric inventions that are often far more flash than substance, even the most famous inventions of the Engineers the Steam Tank is little more use than a novelty in practical military applications, for every heroic tale of a Steam Tank winning a battle goes a hundred un-told stories of their bogging down in mud, collapsing bridges and breaking down despite what the commonly held belief that these novelty weapons are war winners, professional soldiers of the Empire hold little stock in their ability and despite the fame of the mad inventors their are equally as many inventors working quietly on practical military applications,
The Wheel-Lock Mechanism
One triumph of this research is the Wheel-Lock Mechanism for firearms. This remarkable system is gradually replacing the more common match-locks in the Empire, nowhere is this more true than in the pistol and carbine armed Cavalry such as the Dragoner Regiment. The wheellock works by spinning a spring-loaded steel wheel against a piece of pyrite to generate intense sparks which ignite gunpowder charge. The result of it is a firearm which can be made to work reliably in inclement weather, as it precludes the need to keep a burning fuse alight (correctly: match) and most critically can be used one-handed, giving Cavalry an effective firearm. It is with weapons like these, rather then spectacularly unreliable concoctions such as the Steam Tank or fraudulent inventions such as the Mechanical Horse (in reality an actual horse covered in cogs and metal plates, which proved to be a confidence trick by a talentless apprentice engineer)

Well nevertheless painting and modelling continues unslowed, here is some more artillery, the helblaster, proved entirely useless in my tournament games, i believe killing in 6 games, 3-4 bestigor, and 1 warhound, bad dice certainly but not an auspiscious start.
The crew are perry labourers and the piece is from Artizan designs
Organ Gun
The Organ Gun caused a bit of a controversy in the Garrison when it arrived, many believing that the multi-barreled design had been copied from Dwarven Engineers and that they would soon cause a furore and tumble the fortress from it's foundation. These fears proved baseless when one was used in action alongside a dwarf ranger patrol with the dwarves laughing away the contraption as 'man-made' noting it's tiny barrels and flimsy wooden carriage.
Organ Gun In Battle
Despite the dwarves disdain the Organ Gun proves it's worth in the garrison, providing close range devastating firepower, whilst still being light enough to be manouverable, something the dwarves seem to rarely consider. It's best use however is defending bridges and fortress gateways, where it's heavy blast of shot will punch through multiple opponents and stop any but the most insane from charging a breach. The far less complex nature of the Organ Gun versus the more famous Helblaster means its far less inclined to explode, something the gunners are most appreciative of.

Fantastic work! Your shields are especially great!
Also I like the mini diorama, though you were quite graphic in the description of how the archer will kill the orc

They are Hussite shields hence the Czech and Eastern Europe influence.
Have to be careful with Orcs they are dangerous!

1. How do you paint a blued steel effect meow?
2. Where do you get culverins and light cannon?
3. Why there is no handgunner formation? and instead you use crossbows instead? don't you find any success of foot troops with firearms? meow.

Lone Cat, 1. It is black paint, drybrushed with metal, then black painted back into the centre (the non-edges), then washed with black.
2. Light Cannon/Culverins are from Perry Miniatures, Organ Gun is Artizan design.
3. Handgunner formation is in the process of being painted, haven't had any success with shooting at all actually besides the big guns that is.
Bit of a cheating update this time as I have no painted models to show you. Have been distracted by some other painting projects, but am currently back in the mood for my fun little Empire chaps! I have been on a wild assembly spree this week, so you can have a little preview of what I am working on, i'll let you figure out what's on the table, keen eyed viewers will be able to figure it out I think!
Going to crack out the paintbrushes tomorrow, few half-painted men to get too also, I always enjoy coming back to old ones, as I can thank past-me for doing half the work
