I chose my Tau because I liked the background and the look of the models. I liked the idea of that there might be a faction that wasn't all about killing everyone else. The idea of a small empire quickly advancing to keep up with the others seemed good.
Once I started playing them I enjoyed the playstyle so I stuck with them.

I started with vanilla marines from battle for macragge because I really liked that Sargeant Octavian model.
Later I swapped to orks because all the ork players have so much more fun than everyone else, and because it's really rewarding to see the look on the other players face when they kill 4 dozen boyz and I say 'That's it?'

I started RG because I was looking through a hobbycraft store on the way back from a holiday, browsing for some LOTR stuff. I saw a SM commander box and bought it. Built it with a combi-melta (the biggest gun in there) and a chainsword, because it looked cool.
He still stands tall today- with a power sword, jump pack, storm shield, artificier armour and grenade launcher.
I chose RG because I loved thier fluff and paint scheme, and I have two armies- one (nearly) finished one, 6000pts, and another WIP one using the BA codex- heresy-era, 2000pts.
I then went for orks because my brother did them and I like converting, mainly to test my marines against.
Then steel legion because I always like IG, and loved them for thier commissars and meatshield "technique", and because my cousing gave me 20 of them. I got yarrick, the fortress of arrogance, the iron saint, 3 leman russes, 10 veterans (carapace armour and shotguns) a basilisk and a sentinel, mainly to back up my RG in apoc.
Then 'nids because I like the models, but found they weren't my style and quit within about 2 months.
Then GK because the fluff is cool, I like inquisitors and the models- I was practically drooling over.
Then DKoK because the models are awesome and I like the fluff.
still working on RG, DKoK and GK.

*indignantly* and I said I liked the fluff!
I love the models, but you try working on £20 a month, with food, pay monthly phones, xbox games, TWO OTHER WIP ARMIES and clothes getting in the way. I'm gonna be getting 50 cadians, 10/15 engineers, a hades breaching drill, a CCS, 3 heavy weapons teams, a sentinel, a centaur, 80 pig iron heads and a general-commissar- WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!
 you've upset me now.
I demand all your death korps as compensation.

I chose my space marine army because i was playing DoW2 at the time and I liked how they look and feel. Now I got lots of Imperial Fists.
My DE, on the other hand... I saw the Incubi models, and was like " HELL YES!" and reflexively purchased half my DE army. That's how my DE were started.

3/4 of the way through 4th ed, my friends started to play, I wanted to. I went to the old GW website (red borders, many more articles), looked through the armies, and actually chose SM on my own without knowing the contents of the starter box or seeing/hearing any other opinions. Went to the store that was having a massive sale, and picked up the starter box (Battle for Macragge), a land speeder tornado, 5 marines, and an attack bike.
Now I'm thinking of starting Tau (already have the codex), as: first, I'm actually tired of 3+, I want to try a more challenging army, and second, I like shooting, and high mobility.

There's usually a particular model that starts it off.
I started my 1st marine army when the original plastic marine box was released - at the time it was the only posable plastic set available. The marine vehicles (old rhino and variants and then new rhino and variants) kept me in marines till I had three companies.
The battlewagon got me started on my ork army and the Mars Alpha Leman Russ got me start on my guard.

I like dead things so my first army I half started was necrons, then I was going to make a nanite based space marine vampire force but people told me about blood angels and I lost interest, then I thought about chaos (nurgle) orks but before I got fully started the idea was twisted into just plain zombie orks.

Dunno, I only really knew about the Orks, Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines when I happened across the province's only GW. So when I decided to start I got the SM codex because I didn't like the Ork playstyle of "Hulk Smash!" and I didn't really want to start off as the CSM for some reason even though they seem pretty cool. But the SM seemed like fun and what I wanted my playstyle to be.
The more I read the codex the more I realized they're a little too mid-long range for my tastes. So now I have the Space Wolves codex. They fit with what I want to do: mid-close range with a tiny bit of long range backup.
Also they seem more interesting to paint than normal SM and what's cooler then genetically engineered space vikings?
Although, I haven't "started" my army yet since all I have is the codex and core book. It's doubtful I'll be able to for at least a month since I somehow lost hours while my boss was trying to give me more.

When I started playing I had already been watching my friends play for several weeks. So I trawled through the GW website looking at every army. The only one that seemed really silly and fun was Orks.
For my second army I wanted something Space Marines, just to try them. So I went with space Wolves because I liked the look of them. Although I can't really get the hang of playing them.
My third army is Necrons. I bought Necrons because they looked cool and I liked their mysterious background.
If I go for a fourth army, not sure right now, it will probably be Tyranids. Though that is unlikely right now, I'm saving my money for the re-release of the Necrons.

Lots of really interesting replies, thanks everyone!
For me, I chose Orks because of their silly sort of humour- it just appealed to me! I also really liked the look of the snotlings, I think their individual character deisgns are great!
I picked up the Chaos Daemons codex today. I havent seen many people use them but I like the slightly different approach with the gifts and the deploying- this should be interesting lol.

I tried to get a guy to play me at my FLGS (He has IG) and he said "Not interested, I am sick of getting tabled"
I had a few others say that the Tau are just unfair.
Though I fielded my Dark Eldar Last night and tabled both my foes. It is an odd thing for me to do that with the Tau.

Sinister Chaos Marine
|
Chaos marines are the ones for me!
I always choose armies based on the background fluff. I don't think i could collect and paint an army that i whose back ground i didn't enjoy. I chose marines because the are simply better than loyalist marines (at least as far as fluff goes). They are far more brutal, selfish, evil, power hungry and driven by hate. I seem to be drawn to armies that have a very clear and undeniable hatred towards another particular race or army. If you read the HH series you too will come to appreciate the true majesty of the primordial truth.

You failed your armor save against GW's advertising weapons .
----
For me it was the fluff that drew me into Space Marines. I'd played both Eldar and Imperial Guard in previous editions, and while I enjoyed the Imperial Guard, I didn't want to pick the 'supercodex' currently released, or at least that's what I told myself at the time to try and tell myself in my head I wasn't a Space Marine fanboi.
But in the end...I am. They're 9 foot tall genetically modified superhumans clad in armor that's more resilient than the modern-day APC that live for one thing and one thing only...war. Why do your duty and die in line when you can do your duty and kick ass? As I've said before...they're like Marvel superheroes, clad in Mark VII power armor.
