I went to WalMart to buy my two brothers that case but no luck. Checked four local Walmarts.

Woo! Found this at my local Wal-mart, 10 bucks as advertised & it's like a dream! Cheaper than a thin layer of battlefoam, and perfect for my first army. I've gotta tell my local players about this. The only thing: I'm not sure how to cut out the foam such that I don't cut all the way to the bottom.
EDIT: Ah, I re-read the first post and now realize that I should just cut all the way through and get some harder foam backing.

Since you only get guns boxes on specialized stores and they cost a pretty penny, I was thinking on using camping insulation, the kind you put under the sleeping bag, and make my own trays with that.

I've found felt also works in a pinch. I use a cheap ass double sided toolbox and felt. works well, only problem is the glue i used (didn't realize how big a diffence there is in super-glues... ) isn't the best so i need to use more felt to pad it out.
