Sorry mate they did a good job. its kind of hard when you are trying to make a movie with very little funds. And I believe it must of costed them 7,000 or 10,000 dollars.

If you want to show the world the Grimdark, you're going to have to portray the awesomeness of the emperor, the primarchs and the Horus heresy in about 10 minutes or less as a quick intro. 40K is loaded with fluff and is too much for a casual observer to sit through. But to make a movie assuming the viewers know what is going on is also a mistake. So a quick backdrop is needed.
Beyond that, you can do almost anything - as long as you do it right. But they likely won't have the budget or the writing talent that satisfies a live action version of 40K that makes both newcomers and vets happy. J.K. Rowling had total screenplay writing liberty because producers were that desperate to cash in. No so with 40K. If GW is given the money, the producers will have them by the sack.
Without a worldwide appreciation for 40K, their only option is to make a prequel standalone short on something like viral video web and get enough of a sensation to get a good budget and let GW take the writing reins.
If I had to pick a story, I would probably steer clear of anything that could be interpreted as campy or just corny. Like Orks, Tau, perhaps Eldar, ect. Chaos Daemons are a good choice because if you do Tyranids you look like you're ripping off every other grimdark "bug-hunt" movie out there. Plus, temptation is always facinating. What does it take to turn the purest of souls? It worked on Horus.

Success is dependant on net gain. Thus it should be the actual ratios of profit to cost being compared. However I dont know the actual ratio so i cant say if it's either, but someone somewhere knows.

For Warhammer, it would work. I can't tell you how many times I watched the intro cutscene of DoW II. I love it so much. Automatically Appended Next Post: Asherian Command wrote:SumYungGui wrote:BlackMath wrote:So with the relative success of the Ultramarine movie

To make even the simplest movie these days will cost in excess of $50,000, and we're talking like the original Night of The Living Dead quality (with color... it was originally B&W because at the time color was possible but the film cost too much for Mr. Romero's budget).

Why not focus on an IG Commissar? That would be pretty gnarly, and it could have him/her embedded with a Catachan army.

I really like the idea that someone posted before about doing the HH books. But...this would need GW backing unlike before, they only licensed the movie and that was it.
GW needs to atleast put an add in White Dwarf or on their site. I think the Unltramarines movie would have been more successful if GW got more involved. Still a good movie though, for low budget little advertising and such.

Yeah I didn't even realize there was a movie until I saw a trailer for it on Youtube (of all places, on the suggested videos tab!). By then it had already been out for some weeks.

Here's a plot you'll never see (speaking of unfilmable aspects of WH40K): Marine army lands on mysterious planet and starts getting attacked by horrifying robotic skeleton's, floating pyramids, and flying spyders. After a long, arduous battle, right when the climactic final push to decide victory happens, the skeletons vanish and the credits roll.
If I didn't already have a ridiculous bias towards Necrons being amazing I believe this opinion might have more bearing but that sounds like an Awesome movie idea. It builds and builds to a 'climax' that simply ends on one of the weirdest notes imaginable. Would Love to see this done and pulled off right.

Event Horizon did a good job of portraying the corruption of warp exposure.
If you're willing to mess with 40k backround, you could have necrons, but have them vanish if their commander or something is destroyed. That way you're not left in confusion.

I hope iam not the only one that thinks he could have improved upon the Ultramarines movie story. I realize they have monetary constraints but more then 5 enemies total would have been nice. If a new movie was to be created with chaos in mind, i would hope to see Khorne and his followers

Filming some of the fluff would be nice too. I remember the story of Old One Eye from the 3rd ed codex. I can just see it. The movie opens with the driver being interrogated by the PDF, then goes into a flashback of his day, up until the point he picked the beast up. Then after his story concludes, you see him getting taken away while the PDF forces mobilize to take down the beast, only to stand outside and watch as Mycetic Spores rain down upon the planet.

I think the best way to portray the warp would be something similar to the Web in Reboot season 3. Beautiful, yet dangerous.

What I'd like to see is either some Ciaphas Cain movies or one for Faith and Fire. The latter doesn't even feature any aliens or forces of Chaos, so everything you need to know about the background can be summed up in three points:
- Uncontrolled psykers are vulnerable to daemonic possession, and this caused the fall of pre-Imperial human civilisation.
- The Emperor's Great Crusade reunited humanity 10,000 years ago.
- The Ecclesiarchy worships the Emperor as a god.
That's it. You could easily fit that in at the start of the movie.
And both of these would feature humans and females among their protagonists, instead of being nothing but Space Marines, Space Marines and Space Marines.
angrypanda83 wrote:Why not focus on an IG Commissar? That would be pretty gnarly, and it could have him/her embedded with a Catachan army.
Sounds like a story I'm mulling on, with said Commissar being assigned to the Catachan CCXIII after flirting with the wrong man's wife.

Oh god that season gave me nightmares as a child. The Teeth, THE TEETH!
Has anyone here seen the Gurren Lagann movies? Those manage to sum up the prequel pretty well in the first few opening moment with Parallel works 8. 40K would be a tad longer, but it shouldnt be that hard (Portray the Emperor meeting his sons and reuiniting the galaxy with some flashy space fireworks, then Horus turning evil, turning on his brothers on the massacre, then the final battle at the siege of terra, with the Emperor wounded, then some aftershots of Daemons emerging from happy psykers).
