I am using citadel foundations, washes, and the basic colors religiously. However, Vallejo fills the gaps that they miss, and I can see how their bottles could be used by the more experienced painters to produce better color ranges. The dropper bottles are very nice, and allow you to mix paints with high precision, but the only reason for me to do this is to make colors that citadel apparently dropped for reasons I can't understand (Vallejo has 3 pinks, while citadel has an amazing zero, even though they tell you to paint things pink?). I can see that adding a drop of white and black to colors can draw out shades much easier, and that in the right hands it could produce awesome results. But for me, at least since I started off into citadel colors and they are easy to reference and available locally, I am only using Vallejo via mail order to fill in the gaps.

Also, yeah, Citadel metals are beautiful and reliable.

When I started painting I very soon bought the vallejo game color set of 16 colors which was about $40. I recommend that if you don't feel like spending on the larger set.
