I honestly have started collecting the only 40k armies that (currently) interest me: Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and Tyranids.

I obviously like each one for different reasons, though i play all of them "to the fluff" even if it is my own created unit or what have you.

IRL, i was first stationed in a Heavy Cavalry Regiment (only one truly left in the army), so i have begun collecting my guard on this premise, lots of armor, with some small air support, and lots of "boots on the ground"

Marines, i love the Iron Snakes, as well as Raven Guard (which i may or may not come back to paint as my skills improve) but this was also my first army, and as is typical, it was "fairly" easy to learn, but is becoming increasingly difficult for me to "master"

Tyranids, i initially didnt like them, i thought the models looked abit weird, but the more i looked, the more their looks grew on me, and now i have a fairly sizable force of them.

On the fantasy side, i started with DE, but like the tyranids, the Ogre Kingdoms really grew on me, and are now my "main" fantasy army

While this is awesome and honorable and IMO the most fun way to go with a hobby, I doubt if any of the game-play-first types care. What's the point of writing your own character fluff, imagining your story to tell, becoming fond of your individualized models who all have names in the back of your head, only to see them get slaughtered embarrassingly without a thought by yet another win win win list that looks exactly the same as the last guy you played's list?

An army being the Space Wolves makes it appealing to me.

Looks. That is usually paramount to me.

Also, how the army feels on the table. This could be simplified to "tactics" but its more than that. Its how the army integrates on the table, and how a large force looks together (for instance I like the looks of Tyranid models, but I don't like how the army looks together. Just my opinion).

Let me just say... I'm still relatively new to the game, I was introduced to 40k by the DoW games and because of that game. I found my self enjoying the humor of the Orks. I enjoy them because they are all psychopathic murderers, that's what they are. They don't care if they die, most of the time, they just want a good scrap. That's what I enjoy.

Recently I just started a fantasy O&G army and after a couple games, I'm enjoying the unpredictability of the army. (yes, I know I'm strange)

I'm not a hardcore or serious player, I'm just in it for the fun. I never expect to win, so it's a nice surprise when I do.

Oh, I love my O&G army for the same reasons. My favourite match was against Daemons of Chaos, where: my river trolls failed every stupidity test, were eventually flanked by a unit bloodletters, who got ten hits in... at which point I finally managed to roll low, failing all ten regeneration saves and losing all three trolls This in turn panicked my 38 Night Goblins (who had got one shot off in the three turns 'til then, otherwise squabbled constantly), who made an epic run towards the board edge.

Meanwhile, my giant had flanked the enemy bloodcrushers, while my black orcs smashed into their front. I watched in horror as my giant took four wounds from the one bloodcrusher in contact, in response rolling a thump with club, which the bloodcrushers inevitably avoided. Meanwhile the fourteen blorcs lost six of their number, and then missed with every great weapon.
Next turn they finished off the giant, then caused enough wounds to panic the blorcs, who they merrily chased and wiped out.

Meanwhile, my unit of 34 big-uns was wiped out over two turns by the unit of 20 bloodletters (for two kills), the unit that in turn three merrily destroyed my river trolls. Turn four, they would charge my still fleeing Night Goblins, causing them to flee off the table.

The only 'success' of that game was my Blorc Warboss managing to fight the enemy bloodletter and survive from the first turn until the beginning of the fourth.

I loved it

The IG fluff helped but really it was using the awesomeness that was the LRBT for the first time 17 years ago that sealed my fate to the unsung heros of the IoM

The models.

I couldn't care less about the rules for the army.
If the models don't appeal, then I will NOT ever play them.

I won't play CSM, Tyranids, BA, SW for these reasons. I loathe ALL of their models.

I play GK - the models are awesome - let down by their rules - but that doesn't matter, because the models look so awesome and besides, if my ego couldn't handle losing a few games of manbarbies, I wouldn't still BE PLAYING with them.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Fluff, Aesthetics, conversion potential - all are joint top place.

Rules and playstyle tend to be joint 2nd place.

Unless it somehow is an Elf/Elven, then it joins the bottom of the pile

Because we don't all play at 'Ardboyz? There's this phenomenon called "gaming with friends" that I recommend you try out

While your name is an impressive demonic entity, your post just makes me sad like a boring dull heavenly creature.
