I run an all infantry SM army, even took it to 'Ard Boyz last year. 70-100 marines on the table really messes with a peoples heads. I usually support it with a thunderfire or two for giggles. I usually run shrike as my HQ because he allows me to counter charge units that get too close to be safe, and he allows me to infiltrate a unit (usually devestators) to guard a flank.
Weather you combat squad or not really depends on the mission and opponent. CB squads are great when it comes to objective based missions because it allows to to separate out your heavy weapons, and engage *alot* of targets each turn. In Kill point games keeping them as full squads makes for 7-10 total kill points but they have to kill alot of 3+ bodies to get every one of them.
The only time I ever had any real trouble was second round of HB last year when I had castled up in the corner and lost 50 marines in one turn to two flamestorm baal preds. It was so horrible I laughed.
You just have to stick to your game plan and remember what the objective of the fight is.
