I needed a mass combat system for our Traveller RPG, and Striker was a little *too* mass combat. When Rogue Trader hit the flgs in 1988 I bought the first copy...

My Year Of Frugal Gaming blog
I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH! |

When I was about five my dad brought white dwarf two hundred and fifty something home for me and my brother to read (he picked it up on the way home from work). It had stuff about High Elves in it. It also had a battle report Tau and Salamanders in it (We both thought the Salamanders were the bad guys. How wrong we were!). It also had a LOTR battle report about the Fellowship fighting Goblins in Balin's Tomb.
Fast forward 10 years, and my brother no longer games. I myself am running out of gaming opponents, my own club being dominated by irritating 12 year olds who do not play properly and argue constantly. I am holding onto my sanity for after Easter. It is rumoured that one of our school-friends will save all wargaming folk in our local area with a wargaming club with an age limit (so no horrid, spiteful midgets!). Huzzah!

My parents bought me GorkaMorka (from Argos no less!) And oh how they did regret it!
To paint those orks i needed paint... which came with 5 free 3-piece space marines.
You see those free marines are like a little hit of a drug to get you hooked, then its a downward spiral until one day when your in your mid-30's and your scratch-building a life-size titan while mumbling about the good old days.

Me and a buddy used to have a bunch of old Ral Partha and D&D models and used to make up rules so we could fight with them. Played Epic under the old Titanicus rules in about '94-'95. Been collecting on and off since then. Started playing 40k in earnest about 3 years ago but before that I'd been painting armies for years. 5,000pts of CSM baby (practically all troops), 2,000pts combined Ordo Hereticus and Scythes of the Emperor, 3,000pts Craftworld Eldar.
The reason why I started playing was the Dole and bucket bongs.

I wanted to start using miniatures for my Star Wars D6 game. A guy at my shop had some nicely painted genestealers. I thought they were pretty cool looking models and when he said he was selling them, I bought them to use in my SW D6 game as aliens for my players to shoot at.
From there I decided to actually try the game. Now I own way too many models...

Can't really remember. I think it was one in my roleplaying that said "This is kinda cool!" and we bought a blister each. I got an IG medic on jetbike. Soon after that it spiraled out of control when 40K Compendium came out and you could kinda build armies. I ended up with a company of marines painted purple with a smiley-symbol as chapter and playing it to and from until "grown up & work" happened.

I was hooked up around the time W40K: Chaos Gate and Space hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels came out (this game rocks to this day I tell ya). After that in 2003 I bought the first edition of Space Hulk in almost mint condition (I have it to this day). Then 2 years later Dawn of War came out and I was hooked. Around the start of 2008 I bought myself the Macragge set, then I bought some more a few months later, then I hooked up one of my friends, bought meself some Tyranids and now looking at today Ive got 5000pts worth of ultramarines and about 3000pts of Tyranids... DAAAAMN!
But my love for TT started when I had the occasion to take a BfMacragge sergeant in my hands, it was love in first sight. But like all first loves come to an end now I don't really like any of the starter kits models .

Was in a mall in 1999 and a kiosk was selling GW stuff I thought 40k looked really cool. Since I was having surgery on my foot and was going to be laid up for a while I got the 3rd edition starter to work on. played a bit during 3rd war for armageddon. The store went under a bit later didn't know anyone else that played. Flash foward to 2010 was talking to my friend and he mentioned his brother played so I ended getting some AOBR orks and been playing since.

I always had a passing interest in modeling and wargames (Risk and D&D were the closest things I had played, at that point, but I liked the idea), but not much exposure. I think I came across some source material after playing a little DoW that introduced me to 40K the tabletop game. I looked up a bit more, found out how big it was, and started trawling Ebay for models. A bit of saving and I got myself AoBR. A bit more and I started expanding. Now I've got probably 3000+ points of SM and Orks that I'm slowly painting, waiting for that glorious day when I can start playing regularly.

My granddad introduced me to the concept of it with his toy soldiers (54mm Napoleonics).
When I was 15-16, some friends had taken up playing ww2 and I joined in with them. Then I found Battletech.
When I was 18-19, 40k came out as Rogue Trader
I've been wargaming for over 25 years.

I went to a school friend's house years ago when I was a young 'un and played Adeptus Titanicus when it was new. I was hooked on wargames right up until I left school, I regularly played Dark Future,True Confessions of a Chainsaw Warrior (Does anyone else remember that??), Adeptus, RT, Space Hulk and Space Crusade, but the epic Space Marine boxed set was my true passion. ( I miss the epic stuff sooo much! Even apoc games don't scratch that itch.)
I then had a 15+ year gap, forgot all about wargames, but came back four months ago when I walked past a FLGS, saw an airborne guard army in the window, and knew I HAD to buy a valk and some tanks!

When I was a student, we played a lot of RPG's. We needed something to do while evryone gathered. We played cards, then got into Magic The Gathering. Then A couple of guys brought in GW games-Space Hulk and Bloodbowl. Eventually we gathered just to play these. I collected a fantasy Undead army for a while, then played Space Marine and Titan Legions....

Got introduced to Warhammer Quest at a brand-new FLGS that opened near me (been playing D&D & Magic for a few years prior to that). Enjoyed it, started looking at WHFB. My buddies and I decided to jump in and everybody picked an army - I went with Skaven cause they had a cool looking icon on the little pamphlet at the store, though I had no idea what they were at first. Played the crap out of WHFB for a while, then along came Necromunda. From there, the jump to 40k was inevitable.
*sniff* I rather miss that store.

I started when I was tasked to research options for representing large battles in a D&D campaign, and I stumbled upon the second edition AD&D Battlesystem rules. (1989, before most of the people who answered this topic were born by their responses.) It turns out that I liked fighting out big battles more than wandering around dungeons. I started collecting miniatures and eventually discovered Warhammer through the miniatures.

@ Warp crafter- Oh god *looks at copy at AD&D encylopedia* I love those systems, although to the casual player you apprently need a masters in accountancy to grasp just how fething intricate and expensive it is
I first started playing bout 5 years ago when I was 12. Walking past a GW for the first time, saw a 'Nid player versus SM and IG and thought 'This appeals to my autistic mind, abstract chaos and mass murder translated through the logic of dice.'
Plus I do enjoy painting, but Im just not any good at it whatsoever
