I just had a little huffing session with my washes, and here's what I think:

Thraka Green: as noted above, unimaginably vile. Like moldy death, airplane-glued to an ork's butt. It's a pity it looks so good and that I have so many orks to paint.
Devlan Mud: same smell, but much less intense. I've never actually noticed it while painting.
Badab Black: same as Devlan Mud, maybe even less intense.
Baal Red: Almost pleasant, kind of a nutty odor.
Ogryn Flesh: Dear god that's awful. The slight mold notes in Thraka Green are overpowering here. It's like what a mummy would smell like if the person had died from a killer fungus.

I can vouch for every wash I've tasted at the end of a brush tasting absolutely horrible.

I also sniffed a few paint pots, but none of them really smelled intense enough to notice.

I've bought a bunch of Devlan Mud's in my time, and only one pot has smelled like the ass of Satan. The rest have been fine (one even tasted slightly sweet).

I agree, washes taste like something that should never, ever make the journey across your tastebuds. Doesn't stop me though

However, a few of my vallejo paints smell like Mountain Dew for some reason.

The 'Cut

I was painting earlier and my cat was on the edge of my painting desk watching me (he does this, he's weird). Roughly 3 seconds after I opened my pot of Devlan Mud, he made that scowling, partially open-mouthed face that cats make when they smell something really, really horrible, and he then not only jumped off the desk, but he started stroking the floor with his paw in the same way he buries a turd in the litterbox.

I'm sorry, Murphy, but I'd like to get this army done, even if it cuts into our quality time.

Well this is certainly one of the strangest threads on Dakka in some time...

Although to be fair, the washes do smell nasty. Especially Devlan Mud and Thraka Green. I personally add my testimony that they stink something awful.

They may smell bad, but devlan mud is positively delicious. Badab black is so-so. I will have to try the green wash sometime.

I remember when games workshop did washes in their first iteration the brown one smelled great, like red wine, soil and that tree bark stuff in play grounds, a wholesome earthy aroma. Tamiya paints smell atrocious, like plastic glue mixed with diarrhea. EDIT POST 777
