Well as most have already said it depends what i'm painting, troops/infantry i hgo for quick/effective, champions/lesser characters i'll spend a few hours on, then generals and large minis (the things people notice) I have been known to spend 40+ hours on. this is a fairly new thing for me as I used to try and paint everything to the best of my ability, it just led to nothing being finished.

Now I also vary it depending on army, I usually have at least 1 'Pro Paint' army going at any one time, something with a few elite troops that look cool.

So currently I am doing 3 quick and easy armies (orks, skaven and vampires, although I am spending ages on the centrepieces of each), it took me an afternoon to paint 10 grave guard and 10 skeletons (still struggling on the ghouls, see my thread about that elsewhere)

I'm also doing 1 elite army in the form of my Blood angels including sternguard in mk 3 armour and sanguinary guard (which i may or may not paint using NMM). The blood angels I am painting at a rate of 1 basic marine every 5 hours.
