But that also overlooks the fact that GW would have no case against this game regardless of which company was behind it, regardless of if GW did practice strategic litigation.

They do not own the right to all miniature battles involving space ships.
They do not own the right to looking up hits on a table.
They do not own the right to the particular perspective in artistic works where a space ship (that looks nothing like their space ships) is viewed from the front as it passes into the foreground.

Good god, why does it always devolve to litigation threats across the pond? There are loads of space battle games, and while this one in question looks to be a mid to lower tier version I can't see any of the other manufacturers throwing anything at it. If anything the Battleship looks similar to one of the types in the old Freelancer comp game, and that's not really a bad thing.

The game does looks initially interesting, but is potentially too mired in complications to flow well even when learned. A good sighting shot, but not good enough to land the big one.

This is a bit of an understatment. Star Wars Miniatures Starship Battles was probably the worst miniatures ruleset ever. Nothing blocks LoS and all weapons have unlimited range? Why bother moving?

While that is partially true without question, that perception is not without some base in reality. Games Workshop has positioned themselves as a company that aggressively defends their IP ...

I don't think Mad for mini's was referring so much to the litigation angle. Rather he's referencing it's mention by a dakka member and showing that there are many dakkaites who look at almost any gaming product see it as a ripoff of a GW product or IP.

Separately, I don't think this is Hasbro taking another bite out of the mini-gaming pie, I see it more as them trying to get deeper into the deluxe gaming market to compete against folks like FFG.

Thought it looked interesting till I saw the mechanics.
Simple game Battleships, made overcomplicated with dice and charts.

I got the impression that it may not satisfy the vet gamer but be too complicated for the casual player ( but at that price tag is it aimed at the latter?)

Possibly it will do as the OP suggests and be a good intro to gaming?

Never going to happen. GW don't own spaceship games and in either case only tend to sue little companies. Hasbro dwarfs them.

Yeah, your right. I was being kind. Thankfully the minis are just amazing despite some bending which is easy to fix in most cases.

If not for the mediocre who would be great, and thank goodness for those who are just terrible they make even those who are mediocre look great

Except if it's more of that Dark Age garbage....

Looks like a nice space combat game and not too complicated. I mean, roll dice, look up chart and either remove blue peg or insert red peg doesn't strike me as complicated game mechanics really. I wonder how the movement in the game works.

Hasbro has always hand they hand in some form of gaming that appeals to the table top and role-playing community: HeroQuest,They own WoTC,I believe they release BattleMaster and Battlescape. So I'm not surprised that they would release something similar to Battlefleet Gothic.

Does seem to look just like battlefield gothic.... but obviously much cheaper. Could be fun.
