The demi-griffon seems a lot more suited to bretonnians than Empire.
Wingless bird-cavalry?
Love the detail on the rider though, and that moustache cannot be matched!

The only thing I'm trying to figure out is if the heads have detail that would otherwise be absent from the model.
If that's not the case, I am getting this guy for my Empire army. He'd make a fantastic Grandmaster of the Order of the Broken Sword--especially with the two spare heads from the Cadian Command Squad(think of the head they commonly used on the commander model, the one with slicked back hair and the overly pompous 'I don't have to listen to you!') I've got sitting around.
That issue aside, I find it a nice model and a good start for the Empire line-up. Can't wait to see what else we'll get--hopefully some Wissenland stuff!

I still find myself wishing for crisper detail and more of that unidentifiable "something" that seems to be missing from Warhammer Forge's range to date...

I still think you're just imagining that there's not 'crisp detail'. The saddle-blanket on Reaper alone looks pretty dang detailed.

Bretonnia keeps the Griffons and sells their B-stock with minor flaws to naive Empire folks

Yes, clearly my opinion must be wrong...

I'm not saying it's 'wrong'. I'm just saying that, in my opinion, you seem to be finding problems where there don't seem to be any.
But hey, it's 'art'. It's all subjective.
