A good stratigist will beat a poor one the majority of the time.
Play what you want and enjoy playing, learn the codex/rules and stratagies of the game and any army in the right hands can be the best.
IMHO
That's bs and you know it.
It's like taking a tank to a gunfight, and expecting the guy with the pistol will come out on top because he's more skilled (and we'll assume that his name isn't Ramirez).
Equip the pistol guy with a melta bomb and he still has a chance to come out on top.
My point is (In my experience) it boils down to strategy and whoever has the better dice rolls that match.

But if the army doesn't have the option to take a melta bomb, then no amount of tactics will save you. Skill is important. Skill and tactics will take you a long way, but in a game like 40k, if you don't take the right tools, you will get slaughtered, no matter how good you are.

In my small gaming group we have a Tau and Necron player that seem to do well,
The Necron player and I have signed up for a tournament tomorrow in the nearest city, (First one I've ever been to)
I'm guessing this will give me some experience and help me understand what the top and bottom armies might be.

i think every codex is worthwhile depending on your group of players. playing with your plastic men is meant to be a hobby not a professional sport. if your playing a warhammer and enjoying your army you've already won. unless your necrons, then your just screwed j/k

I'd actually love to play in a game like that, Tau backed up by vanilla marines would be pretty devastating (can't assault the tau without going through the marines, marines fall back from CC at every opportunity to open up shooting...).

I agree Tau are bottom tier, but nothing is worse than the Necrons IMO.
Against any army with halfway decent assault capabilities, Necrons should get ran over 99.9% of the time.

Its interesting, I am a Necron player, and I win 85% of the games I play. These are generic pick up games.
I do agree power gaming wise they leave much to be desired.
I cant match Mephistifial or Bjork Stormcaller in a fight.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I would rather play crons then tau cause
1. Well Be Back is annoying to face
2. I can telleport like no tomorrow if done right
3. The tomb spyder trick
4. War-scythes taking away all saves.
5. Models are easy to paint. I started 40k with Necrons 2 years ago, and gave them up fairly quickly afterwards after hearing all the doom-mongering of "They'll never win, don't even bother". So I moved on to other armies.
A few days ago, I dug those necrons out of their drawer and gave them a play in a random game against orks.
I got -ANNIHILATED-. I think I killed maybe a quarter of his army before I got phased.

The point is that the Necrons lost a significant portion of their anti-armor with the new glancing shot damage rules. What was designed to be their main source of anti-armor was now extremely nerfed. That's a serious disadvantage that leaves a player challenging you to just load up on AV12 armor and leave your world in ruins. At this point, it doesn't really matter how well you play... and yes, you can roll well, but that's why it's a 95% loss rate instead of %100.
If you are winning a lot with Necrons, you are either insanely lucky or are playing against people who have no idea how to counter them. Because all you need to beat Necrons is assault squads, plasma cannons and lascannons. Necrons lose against Orks because they get cheap heavy weapons and Necrons have only one weapon that uses anything other than a regular shot, and that's the monolith. The necrons do horribly at mob armies.
Believe what you want and play them if you want. But you're playing a 10 year old codex that is two game editions behind everything else with the smallest army roster and the most limited diversity in wargear, and one of the prime advantages of being Necrons removed in new rules.
I shelved mine for Eldar.
