Since when do nids have melta?

Good point, I was wrong-- I had thought Zoanthrope focused shots were Lance and Melta, but now I see that they're just Lance. My mistake.

I never quite understood the hubbub about Meltaguns. Unless you can alpha strike your enemy (VendettaMeltaVets or Drop pod assault) then chances are the squad with with melta in it is going to get targeted first, and the short range is so suicidal that even if you do pop a vehicle with it, whatever is inside is most likely going to eat the melta unit alive next turn.

It's because in mech IG lists you can have such a lot of melta with good BS, firing from inside vehicles, supported by longer range tanks or Vendettas, and your transports' own heavy weapons, that it works.

I was going to ask in a forum but I think this thread may be able to fulfill that instead? if I were to arm a devastator squad for multi roles, what do people think is a decent load out? I was toying with the melta as weapon I love it but it's short range makes it kinda useless if your not moving and shooting with it as the missile launchers and other heavies are far reaching! does anyone use melta in dev squads anymore?

Tau can pack 15 melta guns on Piranhas, if they forgo Pathfinders.

They can pack another 14 on crisis suits, plus 14 missile pods, if they forgo plasma rifles.

They can also pack nine twin-linked railguns on Broadsides, if they forgo the Hammerhead's large template attack.

So it isn't that Tau can't bring the pain. It's just that their stuff is more expensive and more vulnerable.

You'd need a lot of points to put all that in a list, of course.

Not to mention the whole "Ignoring pathfinders" thing, which is just a bad idea.

Its a pity the Melta weapons on the Piranhas are only Meltaguns ,not Multimeltas. You'd have to be really really close, which is hard to do with a vehicle squadron sometimes.

This is why they are better used as seeker missile platforms, boosting up the side of the table to score side-armor hits on transports. Melta is really pointless for us Tau, railguns do it just fine.

True.

I had Tau for a while. I never really got much use out of melta except with deep-striking stealth teams behind tanks.. ah good times

In your squads, doing the chainsword tango

Missile launchers are good again? I thought they were always good...

Missile launchers power is their versatility, but they don't really specialize. I still want my meltaguns, especially on fast platforms, for enemy armor- even if they dont have a land raider or a russ, if that dreadnought needs to die, a couple of meltaguns to the face sure does the trick. I still want my flamers too, because whilst missile launchers can certainly wittle down a target in cover on an objective, they can't dislodge them live a couple of flamers dropped on them

I think the better term is that Nids have a lance weapon (from zoanthropes)...
