As a United States Marine who has family that also fought in every "world" war (many of which fought besides your grandparents, yes even you brits, ironically on both axis and alliance sides lol) I gotta say I find the America hate here amusing.
Great picture love the patriotism!
In my time of service Ive seen my country do great and terrible things. In the end I can still say im proud to be an American in the same way you are all proud of your nations.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.

As for calling the two major conflicts of the last century WWI/WWII, The Great Wars, etc, they could rightly be called G.B.'s Wars of European Domination, as I seem to recall both started due to the English wanting to prevent Germany becoming a European Major Power and threatening British hegemony.
Here in America, we have a saying that if it weren't for America, Europe would now be speaking either German or Russian. This is due to the impression that despite America spending much treasure/blood in the two conflicts (which were really European Affairs) many Europeans today are less than slightly appreciative of the fact. Winnie, I believe, was quite appreciative.
Best regards to all...

They could also be considered to have occured because of the rather intricate web of mutual defense pacts floating around at the time, which drew more and more countries into the war until it became a "world war" as well as a large number of other factors. Not to mention several thousand years of history of kicking the living hell out of one another. I will not deny that European Imperialism was not one reason that the war escalated.
World War II is largely considered to have been started due to the military activities of Germany and Japan. Indeed, at the outbreak of war, Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister and had very publically called for appeasement of the Germans during the pre-WWII years.
And this highlights perhaps why here in Europe we are seemingly not as appreciative of the Americans as the Americans would wish us to be. This is not to say that we understand the importance of the raw material and products that the Americans sold us (at extortionate cost I might add) as well as the fighting men you eventually decided to send. However, the main gripe comes from, in my own personal view, America then deciding that they somehow "saved" us.
Indeed, in both WWI and WWII a case could be made that the Russians did far more to win the war than the Americans.

To a large extent, Russian losses were due to Uncle Joe and socialism/communism. The Stalin purges right before the war (including the military) whacked around 30 million people. Stalin and his generals also spent the lives of their men as if blood were as available as vodka.
And, don't forget that America sent the Russians megatons of material to help them stay in the war.

Nice picture, although I think that the hand is too far up on the banner pole, not leaving enough room for the flag to attach. Far better than anything I could do though, so who cares. She should definitely keep it up.

As I menrioned before, this is rather off topic. If you really want to argue the relative merits of countries, make a thread about it* Again, if you look, I made no mention of American involvement not being important, simply that your expectations of grattitude far outweigh the realities of the war(s). I also mentioned nothing about Russian losses, merely that their contribution to the wars was significant. *I know there are a lot of history buffs on Dakka who would love to talk to you about it. No one i know is proud of England or Britain... in fact most people think it's a miserable hole where it rains to much... then they think "At least we don't live in Wales" to which the Welsh reply is usually " you"
In short Britain is a country made from countries that really don't like each other.

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood. |

A single line is not a diatribe. And as the author of the single line in question, I can safely lay to rest any concerns you or anyone else may have as to it being in any way seriously intended. Please, this kind of jumping-down-throats attitude doesn't help and in fact only adds to the problem.
You really think that I could get as many posts as I have on a board moderated by such a pro-American/anti-anti American mod as Frazzled and actually think I could get away with truly anti-American posts?
