It's not really the hair per se but the overall character design which is horrible. He looks like a teenage punk who will spend most of the game whining that his parents didn't love him enough and that's why he burns down buildings or something . Plus he just doesn't look like Dante anymore (he wouldn't look out of place as a Joker henchman though).

1) Capcom came right out and said "Hey guys, we aren't selling enough with the Devil May Cry series, so we changed him radically like this solely to piss you off for free publicity so we could sell more copies." Paraphrased, of course, but Inafune actually said that.
2) Dante looks ALOT like Tameem Antonidos, the Lead Designer of the game. He turned an already incredibly established Character, and turned it into himself.
3) Tameem said "Old Dante isn't cool anymore" and when fans backlashed because of this, he simply stated "I don't care".
4) Dante NEVER smoked in the original storyline. It was one of his major points the initial developers drilled into him.
5) There is still Nero's story to fill out. Is he Virgils son? Is he someone else? Is he Virgil reincarnated?
6) Capcom has come out and said "Hey guys, if this game DOESN'T sell well, we will continue on with Old Dante. If it does, we will continue on with THIS Dante."
7) Tameem is rebooting this franchise for Capcom, but doesn't even know when the original came out.
8) Capcom has been said to be "working with" Team Ninja (Ninja Theory? Either one) on it; but it has never been specified on how closely.
9) Dante was never specified as to where he lived, but New Dante sports a English Flag on his sleeve.
I got plenty more. It has nothing to do with his hair color.
