The Inquisition is excessively ruthless, overzealous, and so on... but they aren't careless. Everything is carefully orchestrated-- they must only get the absolute BEST of humanity. Not even Space Marines have as stringent of requirements as the Inquisition, because Space Marines do not wield anything of the power an Inquisitor wields, even a chapter master.

I'm not saying that Space Marine recruitment method is harsher or more demanding. However as far as I can tell the way in which an Acolyte is trained, the methods by which he is tested, and ultimately when and how his name is put forward for induction as a full blown Inquisitor, is almost entirely due to his mentor's personal views and preference.

But I never thought the Inquisition was such a careless, excessively ruthless and over-zealous organisation either.
Oh my god. You need to read the expanded account of what happened during the 1st Armaggedon War in the new GK dex. Straight up evilness. Besides killing everyone on that planet they killed another 2 billion off that planet for the most ridiculus reasons. Including brave storm troopers who stood side by side with them fighting a Daemon Primarch. Bastardos! Indeed. There are many bad, incompetant Inquisitors that make more bad, incompetant Inquistors.

To be fair they didn't actually kill them. They just imprisoned them in concentration camps, sterilised them, and forced them to rebuild the damage that the war had inflicted and make the world ready for the new colonists.

That was stage one. Stage two was to go on a crazy 2,000,000,000 person killing spree that involved murdering people who'd barely even heard of the planet Armaggeddon. Wait a tick, you said that they killed 2 billion people on Armaggeddon. You mean they barely heard about the War, right? Not the planet.
And, considering Amrageddon is a massive Hive World, 2 billion is a pretty paltry amount...unless you're one of those 2 billion I guess.
oh and the stormtrooper thing: It's like killing Olanius Pious a hundred times over (possibly thousands) then erasing him from history.
Isn't that what GW did?
EDIT: BTW, haven't read the new GK codex apart from extracts. Must be missing something.

They are. But a bad inquisitor doesn't last long, and can damage the Imperium, so other Inquisitors often bring the hammer down on an incompetent recruiter. KamikazeCanuck wrote:Indeed. There are many bad, incompetant Inquisitors that make more bad, incompetant Inquistors.
"Many" is misleading. Most Inquisitors aren't incompetent. It's only the ones that need to be for the sake of plot device that are. Given how much bromance GW has for Space Marines, this often leads to people believing that ALL inquisitors are incompetent. That's GW's incompetence for making people think such.

Yeah, I know about the story of the 1st war for Armageddon by heart (at least the first fluff written by McNeill, I never intend to read any fanboy idiocy written by Ward).
But the internment of Armageddon's population in work camps makes some sense. The Inquisition wanted to hide the existence of the traitor primarchs. In addition, in the previous fluff, the Inquisition only sent to work camps the soldiers and the civilians that faced the Chaos hordes and survived (but it is still a horrible act). The rest of the population that did not face the invasion (like the Armageddon Secundus hivers) were left unharmed IIRC. Neither did the Inquisition slaughter 2 billion civilians outside of the Armageddon system in this previous fluff.
But Ward apparently "upgraded" the Inquisition paranoia and sadism with his new codex.

Any Inquisitor has the authority of the God-Emperor of Mankind. They can do absolutely anything that he could. On paper.
Brash, arrogant inquisitors may order Titan Legions, Astartes Chapters and agents of the Officio Assasinorum to do their bidding.
Smart inquisitors will request their assistance.
Some inquisitors don't tend to last very long...

Correction on my part: wasn't 2 billion executed but "several" billion including many planets that had never heard of armaggeddon. The IG got bushwhacked while departing the planet in their transports when they were most vulnerable.

I'm surprised, I can't imagine the Space Wolves allowing an open attack like that to their allies to go unpunished. I mean, if they got uppity about the concentration camps then the massacre of the IG would definitely provoke a response. Yeah, my point was that there was by no means a standardised form of testing would-be inquisitors.

@EF
They fought the good fight. I think they could write a whole book about how the space wolves heroically ferreted away thousands of refugees from the genocide while giving the Ordo Malleus the finger. (wolves have a long standing tradition of giving the inquisition the finger). Near the end though it seems the grey knights were wiping out whole planets just to spite the wolves. Let's say the Wolves save 17 stormtroopers and get them to planet Bob of 40 million. Planet Bob ceases to exist shortly thereafter. The point had been made and all the Wolves could do was shake their heads and go home.

The Inquisition destroyed the IG transports in space???
That's nonsense. At least, they could have sent them on some suicide mission to die in the Emperor's name. They could have given those brave soldiers a chance to die like real warriors instead of an anonymous and cold death in space.

No surprise Huron got a bit nervous and touchy when an Inquisitor vessel arrived in orbit above his planet. I would have obliterated that Inquisitor ship too in his situation.

Of course not, can't let all those brave guardsmen go around jabbering about how the Traitor Primarchs are still alive while the Loyalist ones are universally dead (or disappeared).
And, to be perfectly honest, with the kind of combat the IG had seen it was likely that the taint of heresy had already taken root in the ranks. Just look at the Cataphracts on Cadia (where Creed distinguished himself in action and took the mantle of Lord Castellan).
Bloody hell.

Wow, quite a lot of Inquisitor info in this thread. I'll have to pick up the RPG books for background reading.
Also i have a question, if an acolyte manages to earn the rank of inquisitor, do they get to choose which ordos they enter, or do they follow their master's example?

Definitely their Master's example. Although later on in their career they might change, though sometimes the Inquisitors that have come from another Ordos are viewed with mistrust.

And the really good inquisitors not only know what power they can command, they know when to do and when not to. They don't command a full battleship squadron to bring them to the liquor store, or even to assist against a single enemy dropship... They'll ask the commander on site what forces he'd deem necessary, then ask to have those. They'll also consider if the mission is worth possibly losing something else or if it would be wiser to first help stabilize the theater before hunting down a single heretic priest.

I'm pretty sure the Inquistion (not GK) existed before the heresy. Indeed, they were the major faction calling for Magnus to be held to account for his dabbling with sorcery.

More likely than not, it was. With the Emperor now unable to go about the Imperium of Man himself to deal with situations as they arise, he needed agents in his stead to do so. If these agents did not have sufficient power, there'd be no point of having them in the first place.

More likely than not they are not what he wanted. Considering humanity has screwed up and become the complete opposite of everything he ever wanted this organization should be no different.

That's like saying that setting off two nukes in Japan isn't what Truman wanted.
No, he didn't want it. But in his view it was what was necessary, much as the Inquisition is to the Emperor, who formed the basis of them when he was interred upon the throne.
true, but technically the emperor didn't form them it was Malcador the Sigillite that did
I'm pretty sure the Inquistion (not GK) existed before the heresy. Indeed, they were the major faction calling for Magnus to be held to account for his dabbling with sorcery.
The Inquisition did not exist before the Heresy.
There were, however, what amounted to "Witchfinders" and they did fill a role similar to what the Ordo Hereticus would come to fill.

So?
I don't want the Texas summer to be hot, but that doesn't mean I won't turn the AC on.
Many things that we don't want are beyond our control, but we react to them anyway in the way we perceive as best.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

The Emperor doesn't want Texas to be cool in the summer. He wants your AC to not blow up the planet.
