I used to play Magic YEARS ago & recently bought the Deckbuilder's Toolkit & a few extras - can't see myself getting that into it again, but it's useful to have around when nostalgia bites or when you fancy something different to play for a while.

Magic has gotten, by the looks of it, very 'hardcore' (if such a term can be applied to Tragic) - meaning there are some immense new cards & abilities, as you'd expect, since I stopped playing about a decade ago. The website is quite cool & the Database is comprehensive & a great tool if you're wanting to build a deck.

My friends started playing about a month ago, I picked up a deck builders toolkit, and now it's practically the only game we play now other than D&D.

I used to play Magic, a lot, when it first came out. My DCI number is in the 4000s. I made the finals of the Ice Age premier tournament - there was only one - which was held in Toronto. I actually got a necropotence in my sealed deck that weekend.

I've still got a bunch of my sets in binders - full sets of Beta, Arabian Nights, Antiquities - all the way up through Onslaught even. I remember running around Gen Con back in 94 and 95 getting the artists to sign cards. Good times.

I remember playing before the 'no more than four of any card' rule - I've got a deck somewhere with over 200 plague rats in it. And playing for Ante, which was one of the first concepts that went away.

Haven't played for a few years now - no idea what the planeswalkers or edhs or any of that stuff is about.

amongst friends (as I agree with the type of player magic draws in) it is potentially the best "hobby" ever. I have been playing for close to 16/17 years now and have a vast a ridiculous amount of cards (most only good for firelighters). Its so simple yet so very very tactical. Coming up with themes or clever strategies for decks is infintely entertaining and even more so when it all works just as you planned. Its simple to pick up and challenging to master. I agree that a lot of cards are vastly overpriced now but really unless you want desperately the latest greatest cards then its fine as the price drops hugely once new editions are released. Also Ebay is fantastic for bargains.

I urge anyone to get out there and buy a couple of starter decks, or however they do it now, it seems to keep changing. Go to your local store and get someone to explain the fundamentals to each colour as they each have a general way of going about defeating your opponent.

If your going to do something wrong, do it right!!!!

Just starting it, and loving it.

The problems are, like people have mentioned, it seems to all about the money! the the people at my LGS are all really smelly and 'large'.

There are seriously cards that go for $90 now?

Oh wow....

Meh, I'm not greedy, and I already promised all of my cards to a dude at work for $20. I'm not going to use them anymore.

Me and my friends used to play quite extensively, but quit around Kamigawa. I played a little after that, due to having a girlfriend who played, but when we broke up (a couple years ago, before I joined this site), I just quit playing all together.

Since we are slightly on the topic of expensive cards, anyone know how much 1st Edition Pokemon cards go for?

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

Try looking up the black lotus on ebay. Some guys is trying to sell a graded 10 black lotus for $100k and apparently it's not uncommon for them to sell for a few K's.

I've got a full set of Betas, including a signed Lotus. I could get $10k for it without trying too hard, and probably more.

Standard: 4x Jace = $300, and just about all the hot decks run that...

Don't have to worry about that anymore, Jace just got banned in Standard, along with Stone Forge Mystic. Bye-bye Caw-Blade. And just FYI, I stopped playing a few years ago, but my brother still plays and has a few Pro Points. He going to Nationals this year at Gen Con.
