Sonic Youth was an influence on some of the punk-inflected Grunge bands, but I've never seen them as any part of that musical movement. I am surprised at the idea of them being "overlooked". They've never been a big commercial band, but they've been an influential band and touchstone for musical snobs for decades.

I love both Empire and Operation: Mindcrime, from Queensryche. Very true that they're a different genre, but they had some great stuff.

I included SY mainly because I feel they managed to stay whether intentionally or by design on the truely "grunge" side of the mainstream.
I dont buy into any of that crap anymore but back in the day I sort of did. People would mention Nirvana, PJ et al and I'd ask them have they heard SY and the answer invariably would be a "who"? You'd pass the tape around then and the reaction turned into "woah".
This was all pre MTV/interwebz/downloading/megarecord shop era.
In otherwords its was ok to like SY exactly because they remained pretty underground and werent plastered all over MTV hits.
Not sure if that made any sense, Im off for lunch.

One more from DJ, awesome.

Anyone for proto-gunge?

@ Albatross: I loved Kerbdog's first album. Here's a gift (if you will) in the form of another Northern Irish band. Also kudos for the Mudhoney link.

@ Mannahnin: Therapy? are definitely period, I think their first two albums came were released later in the US (after their third). Hater are '93 though I admit I didn't discover them until '94, just before Soundgarden's Superunknown was released. Back in the day finding new stuff in a small town was a hit or miss affair, they were on TV on a show that aired at 3AM; you needed to be dedicated (or unemployed) back then to watch rock on TV. Anyhow here's some good post-grunge (a truly rare thing!).

BTW: Do Bush count? They were practically invisible over here.

Screaming Trees is still one of my top three favorite bands of all time.

...as for a band to add, I'll toss in Seaweed:

Grunge is like, eh. Late 80s punk has more 'feeling' in it, I think. Sonic Youth.... Come on. Listen to the noise, don't just hear it

Youtube is blocked for me, so I will just post some names of some old favs that may be a little obscure to some:

Seven Mary 3
L7
Mudhoney
7 Year Bitch

and...

The Gits

It was very sad what happened Mia Zapata. I wish more bands paid tribute to her.

Lots of great bands mentioned here. I echo the sentiment about the nostalgia going through Seatle these days. I went on vacation there last year and hit up some of the music shops and was reminded again what is was like in the days of Doc martins, chuck taylors and flannel shirts

On another note, not sure if it totally qualifies but a major underated band (but whose fans are diehard) who emerged from the ashes of a post Kurt Cobain world with relative success was HUM. They were from Chicago (Champaign actually) and more along the lines of smashing pumpkins but while their later stuff got more poppy and space rock like their first few two albums where much closer to punk / grunge

Sorry no youtube at work but if someone can post Stars video it would be appreciated

Brilliant choice, sir! Stars didn't come until 1995, but it's an awesome track, and the band was around during the period.

Soul Asylum is too successful for the thread, I think, but the Meat Puppets are a great choice. Of course they have extra Grunge cred for Nirvana including multiple covers of their songs in their Unplugged in NY set/CD.

Spoiler:

The Replacements are legendary, of course, but pre-date Grunge considerably, and were more grandfathers of alternative rock; with punk components, of course.
