I think mark 8 also covers the air filter of the space marines helmet with a gorget. That has always been an issue for me, that open mouth thing can't possibly protect as well as the slopped beak, it would funnel any hit straight to your face.

the problem with the beak is that it could also deflect shots down into the chest area.

this was a serious problem and was solved by the gorget.

Still better than hitting you in the face. A problem the MK7 didn't address. I think the gorget is probably the better way to go, but you don't see those so much.

another problem with the 2 designs is that the gorget isn't compatable with the Beakie helmet and vice versa.

so you can't have both types of protection.

Well the gorget means you don't need the beak anymore.
