A BFG game would be cool.

I remember a Star Wars game of space battles,it was good,it would easlily fit BFG.

I'd sort of like a turnbased FPS BFG RTS myself. So voted other even though multiple choice would have worked.

Planets are turn based, basically assigning troops to specific areas for on going fights, resupplying troops, restructuring and positioning squads etc. Pretty much the stuff in between the fights.

Then you can actually fight in those battles as a commander or something in FPS, carrying out objectives with a crew in order to win that stage of the fight.

Then it can have a larger campaign to it with a BFG RTS, basically moving the fleet from system to system and encountering fights with the enemy or breaking through blockades to get into the system or planet surface itself.

Total War: BFG would be a good concept for this game IMO. Have the grand campaign be focussed on a system, and when fleets come into contact, go into RTS for the battle.

WHRP and 40KRP would work well as a Mass Effect of Elder Scrolls type of gameplay.

Another good way to represent Mordheim and Necromunda could be as a Mount and Blade style game.

I'd really like a Warhammer Fantasy or BFG turn based strategy (not RT).

Something grid based, unlike the TT game.

Homeworld 2 would be better. Or Hegemonia: Legions of Iron.

Yeah listen to slaarg, Im doing a computer game design course after the summer and I am very much looking forward to it, I already did a 1 year course on java, c++
It is alot of hard work, but once you manage to grasp a hold of the basic ideas of it, you will be able to make a basic game, by basic I mean REAL basic.
It would take a team of professionals to make a game from scratch, aswell as alot of investment

But all these games except the battlefleet game have been done or are in development, apparently dark millenium is going to be more similar too APB than WOW so it might be 1st person, or else 3rd

But yeah, my fave games are :
Call of Warhammer (a extremely well done mod for medieval total war 2)
Shadow of the horned rat (Couldnt get past the 4th level, but still pretty good)
and prob Winter assault

Go in assuming there is no such job available as "Game Designer". Nobody gets hired into a publishing company with that job, you will start as a QA, tester, artist, or programmer (guess which pays better? But not by as much as you would hope). Getting your foot in the door is the tricky part, once there hunker down, get your time in, learn everything you can and develop pitches and documents so that when the opportunities present themselves you are ready. You need to be able to write a document that details everything (and I mean everything) about a game you are developing. This means working on writing in a presentable way: proper grammar, word choice, coherent structure, ect. Serious people with money will be reading it. Be prepared to deal with complete idiots and with people with insane talent, but don't let it discourage you if it is what you want. Persistence makes a difference, but you need to develop the tools to get there along the way as well.

Bioware has actually put out an ad for a game designer. Wanted a neverwinter nights mod for the the portfolio iirc.

I didn't say there literally wasn't such a thing, I said go in pretending there isn't. Most are promoted from within. With Bioware it is a well known company and they will get an insane amount of overqualified people applying. Minimum requirements are just the minimum expectations to turn in a CV and portfolio, meeting those minimums probably won't land the job. This goes to the point about being prepared.

I checked Bioware and the only thing listed under design is "Writer", not game designer.

Behind you

I'd love to see a 40K version of star wars empire at war. Fleet, then ground action, but with titans. Or a World in Conflict- similar game with titans.

I'm just going to put this in bold since it's a huge pet peeve of mine.

Space Marine is third person, not first person. You know how you can see your character? Yeah, third person, so is Gears of War. Halo, Battlefield, Call of Duty and the like are first person. Please learn the difference.

Now that that's out of the way...

Things I'd love to see but never will?

A Gears of War styled game where you play as Dark Eldar. No, I don't mean Space Marine where you are the cover, I mean slinking around, jumping through cover like a maniac, gunboat Raider assaults and the like, that would be a lot of fun to me.

Also, a Champions of Norrath style Warhammer Fantasy RPG where you could play as... Either a good team or Warriors of Chaos. Seriously, Champions was the best game ever.

I know neither of these will ever happen, but I can dream. And yes, I shall dream.

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think.

Did anyone suggest that Space Marine wasn't a Third person game?

There's a reason why Dawn of War was given an 8.8 ON IGN. For coming out in 2006, it was the best of its generation. I can't say that about DOW 2 however because I've never played it. It will be interesting how SPACE MARINE comes out.

There are some games you know were you can change your view. Plus no one ever said anything about 1st person.

Harsh and uncalled for.

Slarg232 wrote:As someone who has walked that path, let me just give you a hint of advice:

You, just by reading this, are not ready to make video games.

You have an Idea, that's great. All Great Games start out as ideas.

But do you really have a Game Idea? Again, I have been down this road, and I know what's going on in your head; you have one cool gimmick, and a setting (another persons IP, which btw, isn't something you can use) and think you have a game. You don't. Not even close.

In order to actually make a game idea, and make it where people will listen to you, you need the following:

Story Board, or what the story is going to be....

Setting, or what makes your players will experiance during the setting.

Sound Design, because no game can be made without Sound.

Controls, because it's really cool being able to shoot someone in the nuts halfway across the map blindfiring while backpedaling..... but How are you going to do that? Will buttons overlap?

And that's just to begin. If you really want to be a Game Designer, go download Game Maker 8, and muck about with it; if you can actually do EVERYTHING required to make a (non Tutorial) game in that, then you just might be able to make a game.

Some SKills you will need to be a Game Designer:

Programming, C++ is recommended, as it's the most widely used.
Communication, both written and Oral. You have to be able to convey your ideas in writing. Also, "Game Idea's" are usually two pages fully describing the game at it's most basic level.
Creativity, because no matter how much like Call of Duty your game is, people are still going to prefer Call of Duty.
Psychology (prefered, but not necessary) getting into your players minds will help you deliver a better game.

Now, if your serious, and I mean SERIOUS, about being a Game Designer, go right ahead, I wish you much luck. I would recommend going over to Extra Credits in the Escapist for some tips as to how to build your games, the dude who makes those videos is a teacher at a Game Design School, Digipen.

But as someone who thought I could make games my career too, you will have to forgive me if I doubt you.

Well, game design is usually a team effort. My brother almost made a career in the graphics design.
