Geeky, yes, as it takes a bit of brains, time and effort to 'get' the hobby.
It is as nerdy as the people who are seen to be in it.

If I recall (indirectly), skateboarding was a but nerdy when it first came around.

Anything to do with war-games miniatures, including 40k, WHFB, FoW, Infinity etc etc is by it's nature 'geeky'. And this is not a bad thing. As a few others have pointed out on this thread it's horses for courses.

Some people spend thier disposable income on getting ****faced every weekend, some people spend the money on their classic cars and some (like me) choose to split it evenly between my PS3 and my Spacemarines......

It's down to how you see things I guess, I don't see GW as particularly 'nerdy' or 'geeky'. It keeps me out of trouble that's for sure!

My wife thinks its cool, and calls me "her nerd." I recommend reading my sig.

And OT now, our hobby is no more nerdy than the losers who memorize sports statistics, and then try and pretend that because those sports arent made up, that somehow makes them cooler. XD

When this sports nerd in my work section tries to make fun of me for my hobby I simple ask him for some random position from some random football team's stats. When he quotes them INSTANTLY I just laugh and go back to what I was doing.

If you like your hobby, then love your hobby.

When your wife suggests roleplay as a result of your table top gaming... life just seems right

I took my wife thru the BRB for fantasy and 40k, the first thing she said was "AWESOME"... codex: Chaos Daemons Nurgle..... to all those who says God aint real....

I agree with most people in this thread. I personally think it is a little "geeky" but that's not a bad thing! As mentioned earlier "Geeks get it done." I don't worry about what others think about it. I have a high college GPA going into my senior year, a steady relationship with my fiancee, a great paid internship with a great company among some other things. What makes me geeky more than my wargaming hobby would be my major as an electrical engineer and all the interests that come along with it . So yeah, don't worry about people judging your hobby. Enjoy it and laugh at those who don't understand .

Is the game a little geeky? Yes it is. However, when people take the time to learn about the game, its really just a in person version of world of warcraft, card games, etc. Yea your going to run into the stereotyped gamer with poor hygiene, screaming waaggh. (not that there is anything wrong with yelling waaggh at the proper time)

However, i've learned that most people when they see it and learn about it, think its pretty darn interesting and cool, but just not there thing. I like that perspective. I would rather be the guy sitting in the gaming store, or at a GT, for an entire weekend then the guy sitting at home playing WOW or any other video game. I am not knocking WOW, because frankly I love the game. But more and more average guys are playing warhammer and table top games.

For guys / gals into it, its our version of sports, social time, and time to escape regular life and laugh. Some people strum guitars for hours, some people work on their house. I paint plastic, metal, and resin little men and models, and find enjoyment around being at GT's bs'ing about fluff, throwing back a few beers / soda with guys-gals from another country / part of the world.... while still finding the appropriate time to yell out a Waaggh once in a while
