The Warp spiders are done for now! I have another 26 of them left to paint for my apocalypse shard, but not for the moment. I have an upcoming apocalypse game coming so I will be working to assemble as many of my partial units as possible and at least painting and basing those I can.
I love the finished warp spiders though. The blue coloring with little energy bolts really came out well I think and the reddish gold hue that came out of the helmets were exactly what I was going for. At some point here I will paint up another five in this manner, then still figure out slight changes for the two other shrines.
Next up on the project list is to assemble my scythe wielding wraith lord, as well as a small side project. Then assembling a whole whack of serpent/falcon hulls that I plan on creating custom turrets for. Easy interchange for prisms, serpents, firestorms, falcons, spinners. We shall see how that comes out. Woo hoo!

A bump to bring my new version of the P & M blog onto the scene. Please check out the new goals, and give me suggestions. Automatically Appended Next Post: Hello all, Well I've been away from my blog for a bit, though not so much from the hobby. I have an end goal in sight and I need your help. I realize that I have accumulated around 25,000 points of eldar army at this point, and I'm not satisfied. I'm still catching up on painting all of it, but as I troll ebay for good deals and pick up this and that, I have needed some kind of an objective at the end of the road. Last night it came to me. I'm shooting for that crazy goal of an entire craftworlds army. I aim to have the entire lot properly painted, based, and hopefully my quality will improve as the project goes. As I run various battles I would like to even build story lines and details about the various characters that pop up in my army. I need your help in determining what a true full army turnout of an entire craftworld would be. Having been in the warp for 10,000 years or so, I wouldn't imagine that they would have an unreachable number of units. As things progress I will work up a targeted roster, and check off all that I have obtained. I would love your input on what else should be added or tweaked. Is 120 guardians enough, or should it be closer to 300? How many titans, air force load out? You can think it, I will try and make it happen. I will just be attaching this to the started blog for now. List to begin as the evening goes. Just ad the new version right here actually. Man, those are some old Eldar. I admit that I don't care much for the old style war walkers and wraithlords, but the aspect warriors are pretty cool. Great painting too, and hope that you can finish your huge army before you die.

Thanks sword wind.
Quick update, although this is an in the past update. I have hear a dark eldar razorwing I made less poky so that I could use it as a nightwing. I've never really thought the forgeworld nightwing fit in with the rest of eldar craft. It's too angular and blocky looking. Reminds me more of the armorcast era guys then the modern sleek look. So I grabbed a razorwing, cut off the worst of the spiny bits, filled in some smoother spacer and swapped up a bunch of weapons. This is a retrofit of an already completed razorwing, I think the next ones I get I will build from the box so I can have a smoother conversion.
Began with removing the blasters from the razorwing, pinning and green stuff to get the bright lance in.
Once the bright lances were in place it seemed they very well followed the profile of the planes body.
Filled in the space near the cockpit with green stuff and smoothed it out via sanding. My sculpting skills are still early on, but are improving. Removing the aggressive dark eldar spiky bits made it a much smoother flowing fighter.
I'll upload the completed nightwing when I get a chance. It was a very enjoyable project with some learning moments along the way. I'm confident that this will be one of the units in the new eldar codex. It's already been re codexed in the doom of mymaera book, and fits in with an army very well. I look forward to building up a couple more of them for fun.

Well, here are the pics of the nightwing complete as promised. l'm also including as a bonus my full army, and a slightly closer view of the right and left. That's a whole great big whack of eldar.
The nightwing. I really like the way it turned out. Still looks like a tuned down razorwing, but that's pretty much how I imagine it.
A side profile of the fighter jet. Looks kind of hot in my opinion.
The whole great big army, minus a couple that are in the process of being glued and such.
half of them.
The other half.
I'll do a bit more catch up in the near future, along with the 1500 point list that is pretty well painted at this point.

So another long over due update to the Altansar army. Just found out about the TSHFT tourney here in Seattle and I'm trying to get a fun 2000 point list up and running. I like the different tertiary missions they have that really force you to spread out of the meta. I'm taking a diverse and I think interesting eldar army that is a little more in line with their fluff then truly competitive. The goal over the next two weeks before the games is to get them all painted up mostly. (I still have big dreams of post varnish tattooing all of them with my fine pens, but I think that table top at least for everything is not out of reach.
First the update.
My Shadow spectre phoenix lord.

Here we have one my now many vehicles with the new paint Altansar scheme.
Really liked bringing the half windshield from the razor wing kit for the upper turret.

Automatically Appended Next Post: More updating. I guess it just ends up all one long post. I'll have one post per page. Mwah hah ha.
Well, I discovered yesterday that the nightspinner I picked up off ebay. Seems like a recast to me. The gun carriage broke into a couple of pieces and the edges really aren't that crisp. Various large holes where things fit together. So after some minor surgery and my first judicious application of green stuff repair... it seems to be going all right. All of the break points went together pretty well, and I used files and scalpel to trim up the soft edges to make them look more crisp. I trimmed them up this morning, but decided not to paint them to give the green stuff a couple of days to kick.
So, started out with a whole whack of primed parts this morning.
Started out with painting the black on the hulls. Get my two to three coats to cover those sections, then come back and do the same with all the red for the basing. The red and black scheme that I've been using is really a pretty simple design. Once I've got all that taken care of it's the blue glow pin stripping between the panels. Windshield will go on next, then the gems and such. Finally I will varnish and in the far future at some date, I will come back to my vehicles and use the cool pens I have to do neat designs making the whole simple paint job look sweet.

I really liked the Shadow spectres fluff wise, and the model are beautiful. However it seems the ghost light rules are not the same as I thought they were. I thought they worked based off the weapon they were networking with. So linking with the exarch meant you got two shots, and Irrilyth got three... Not so much.
My house guys let me play with the multi shot version, because otherwise it's 400 points for a non ap1 really good looking str 10 shot.

Very interesting on the nightwing, looks very good. you have some good looking things going on with this army. those spectre's are calling me.
I haven't looked at 40K since about '08, so my fluff is out of date and I don't remember some of it, but I always enjoyed the world building bit so thought I'd comment on your idea of "what would a craftworld have?"
From my perspective it comes down to what is strong with the craftworld, and what is its weakness. No normal battle will ever represent the full might of a craftworld.
Special charachters: no craftworld is going to have the entire list of Pheonix lords, let alone all other specials. These charachters could as easily represent special charachters of the worlds Aspect shrines. One or two true Pheonix Lords might be appropriate.
HQ: any craftworld is going to have multiple farseers and warlocks, though that could vary widely. A craftworld like Altansar stuck in the warp might only have a handful of farseers and warlocks where Ulthwe might have dozens of farseers. The avatar is a special thing, and that should be reflected as it not being a part of the "standard" army.
Troops:
I always had a big problem with guardians, "lets arm our poets, sculptors and muscians with paper armor and short range guns". My feeling on them was to treat them as 3rd line miltia, last resorts for my craftworld and so I rarely deployed them to the table. Therefore, I think anywhere between 100 and 500 is probably appropriate depending on the size of your craftworld and its (your) feelings on guardians.
The core of most craftworld armies should be Dire Avengers, I don't think you are out of line here or on guardians.
rangers and pathfinders are highly variable, and made up a good core of my craftworlds forces, these and Harlequins will come and go from a craftworld so it is really a matter of taste. For Altansar though, I think Harlequins would be an extremly rare visitor, becoming more common as time passes.
Aspects in general: Each craftworld will have a differnt scale of aspect shrine. Some may be non existant, others very strong. Typically I doubt anyone could fault scorpians and banshees as the major shrines along with DA's. It would be perfectly normal for some aspects to NOT be represented or for one particular shrine to be represented excessivly. A more guardian heavy craftworld though will probably have fewer aspects and vice versa. Considering your ratio of aspects to guardians, I don't think you are too out of line for an aspect oriented craftworld, but I think you are short on DA's compared to the other shrines. Having a small shrine of spectres is not unreasnoble on an ancient craftworld, especially being aspect heavy, its likely rarer shrines will be represented.
wraithguard and wraith lords: A healthy craftworld will probably only have small core of these. A dying craftworld like Iyandon on the other hand, will rely heavily on them. I don't think you are neccessarily out of line.
vehicles: To me, vehicles are dichotomy, on the one hand they are such a vital part of an eldar army that they have to be represented. on the other hand, vehicles are expensive, resource intensive investments. a craftworld like Altansar could have issues with fielding alot of vehicles, or they may have been stock piling. This is where I think any "full" craftworld list breaks down. I think you probably have about half the wave serpants and falcons I would expect for a force this size. Fire prisms and nightspinners I am ok on, though maybe a little heavy on fire prisms. Warp hunter I'd bump up by one.
Super Heavy's: I can't help but think you are heavy on titans and light on tanks. Titans are incredibly powerful units, but they are also a vast requirement of resources and lack the speedy punch of eldar tanks.
Flyers: this is a big problem for me, I can't help but think a craftworld would have a large number of flyers both for ground support and air/space superiority. Big investment, but also big versitility. I think this is where the model breaks down, because in my mind I'd be thinking on the order of 30+ nightwings, a dozen Phoenix and another dozen or so vampires.
Anyway, looks like a hell of a collection

Thanks for the super reply. Exactly the kind of response I was looking for.
I'll go space by space with my thoughts.
HQ:
Ulthwe supposedly has all the farseers they have because of the fact they are so close to the warp. So if anything I would expect the Altansar people would be more so effected. Although the strange tides of the warp could affect it the other way. When I work on a specific craftworld codex I was going to change the farseer into more of a warseer. Still have the psychic powers, but different ones more combat oriented. They would be more concerned with the next battle then being able to look far into the future. I also think it would be the natural progression of the warlock. As to the phoenix lords. I like to play apoc games, and I like to be able to make very different lists. I've found a viable use for all of them except Asurman.
Troops:
I think I'm pretty happy with the 120 or so that I have. Eventually when I get it all assembled I'd like to think I could have some amazing huge apoc game. I figure the dearth of pathfinders is because now that they have escaped the warp, a whole whack of eldar are trying to get out there and experience the rest of the verse since they have been stuck battling for so long.
Aspects:
I'm trying to focus on the dark reaper shrines. I feel that since Maugan Ra was a big part of their freedom and born there, it would stand to reason his aspect would be the most popular. Howling banshees being likely the least regular since I feel like they are the polar opposite.
I'd love to have a ton of vehicles, and to that end I think I'm going to try my hand at casting. I've got nearly a dozen games workshop hulls that I can use for the proper games, but I think I could cast up another couple dozen if I felt it would fit the story of my craftworld. It is mobility and flexibility that seems to define the eldar as a whole.
On the down side, while I think I can cast up the hulls for a serpent and such, the flyers are just too large and beyond what I would be able to do. I liked the process of converting over a razorwing, and I think I would continue to do so. I may decided that the flyers in general were the force that took the most damage while in the warp.
Thanks much for your response. Automatically Appended Next Post:
An update along with the response there.
I managed to get my 2000 points for TSHFT finished up. I will have a good army photo from when I go play a game this weekend with them. I thought I would update with some of the continuing projects from there.
First off we have here a necromunda farseer that I picked up to be my Caelis Sol model. The leader of Craftworld Altansar he will be equivilant to Eldrad Ulthran, with a little more weapon skill, and three psychic powers, but none of them the same. Idea being he has spent a little more time fighting for his craftworlds life, and less time staring into the future.
This has become the standard style of how I start my models now. I was for a little bit priming and then spraying a base color on the whole thing. What I'm doing now is painting black wherever there is going to be shading in the future. This really seems to make a pretty big difference as my coats have gotten a little bit thinner and more consistent.
His front.
His back.
This here would be the harlequin shadow seer that I was working on for TSHFT. I ended up not bringing him along. Harlequins survived really pretty well without him. I think people assumed that he would be in there, so nobody even tried shooting at them until they were close.
Finally for the moment. We have one gun/arm of my armorcast revenant titan. I painted him up the basic colors for a big apoc game, and now I'm getting back to him. I would consider this just ready for varnishing now. One I have a few coats of varnish on, I plan on coming back with pens to mark out some cool details. Tribal tattoo style and eldar calligraphy is what I had in mind. We shall see how that goes.
This is a little bit of a close up of the gems. I really like how my gem work has started to come out. I'll put more of a matte or semi-gloss on the rest of the arm, but I'll put a high gloss varnish on the gems themselves.
Thanks much for looking all, and of course I look forward to your comments.

I totally agree with you on the flyers, Like i said, i see them as the biggest issue to fielding a realistic theater level force. 40k was never meant to really represent combat on that scale and of that type. Epic on the other hand does give a better clue as to what that type of warfare could play out as. Realistically, you are going to have not only air superiority aircraft, you are going to have strike/bomber craft, assault craft and transport craft.
Another excuse for the lack of fliers is simply they were needed elsewhere, for instance intercepting an incoming enemy drop or as part of a craftworlds space fleet. An old adage of war is like kills like. Infantry kills infantry, tanks fight tanks, aircraft fight aircraft.
One thing I have found flipping through the imperial armors is I really like the idea of formations. if nothing else they give a good idea of what specific combat groups might look like. In a standard 40K game we lump it all together in a diluted form but on the apocalypse level squadrons and formations can play a lot more important role in putting together an army.
Not only do you have things like the sunfire squadron, spirit host of the lost, Court of the young king etc, but you can also think in terms of strike formations and how certain aspects best support each other and how their serpents would be best equipped,as well as what else might ride with them. Military leaders with lifetimes of experience would not hesitate to think in terms of supporting roles.

Another little update here. Progress on the Revenant titan. I've gotten some of it to the stage of varnishing, and then the detail inking that I want to do with all my miniatures eventually. I felt like this was a good step to show the difference between pre and post varnish. I'm using Golden brand varnish. I have matte, satin, and gloss. I'm using the matte as a cover all, though avoiding the gems. Then I come back and coat the gems with Gloss. I occasionally use the satin on metallic parts. If I want to highlight for instance the gold bits on a farseer, or the power cords on weapons, then I use the satin.
Eventually I'd like to do kind of tribal style tattoos on all of my guys. This has been a good testing in large scale before I do the little stuff. I have a set of .005 permanent ink pens, as well as .05 that I'm using for the titan. A lot of that plan was inspired by the path of the warrior series covers focusing on the helmets with the fine details.
This is a good before and after shot of the two pulsars.
From another angle.
The legs, one side half dry, the other wet and glossy.
There are a couple other pictures of the titan work in my gallery in the revenant titan set.
Cheers all.

More updates. Managed to finally get a couple of decent pictures of the inking I'm doing on the revenant titan. Used black ink over the matte black paint so that in some light you can see them, and in some you cannot. I really like the way they are coming along so far. The red ink however is not showing up as well, so I may need to come back with a little bit of paint over it to make it look the way I want.
You can see it best on the tip of the pulsar, as well as a little on the barrel.
Right at the base of the leg you can see a bit of it as well.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also have a couple of updates with Caelis Sol. Coated the robes in copper, then brushed over in black, and then another coat of copper. I've been doing this on most of my psychics with their robes. Then started on a squad of striking scorpions and howling banshees.
Added in the upper coat of copper and continue to tune in the rest of the colors.
Striking scorpions and I started with a spray coat of black. Then I passed over the whole thing with a wash of jenkins green. I plan on picking out the armor plates in a lighter green, and giving them a couple of highlights in the Altansar scheme. They will be one of the most traditional aspect style likely.
The banshees are also a black base, with my gloss black coating over it. Then white and bone for all the armor plates. Blue for the power weapons, and red on the cloth bits. I'm going to be bronzing up the armor for the sword arm to make that stand out a bit more.
I think that's it for now. Looking forward to C&C.

Another long over due update on the craftworld Altansar project. I managed to get my howling banshees along to my table top quality, though not to the varnished done level. I high lighted their vambraces with copper, I do love that color.
Here is the exarch with her executioner.
The squad of banshees, with focus on the three in the back. I will eventually expand this squad to a full ten, as well as likely another squad or two for a Jain Zar themed apoc formation.
Here is table top level for Caelis Sol, my Eldrad knock off. I considered changing the top of the staff slightly, adding a scythe to it in the vein of Maugan Ra, may do it in the future.
At some point in the future I will come back and varnish, mark, and base these.
I've also still been working on the titan, his legs and arms are done. I'm about to varnish the main body, then finish tattooing and will post a finished picture when he's assembled. Hopefully for an apocalypse game at the start of next month.

Hmm, your painting needs work - detail is mostly lost. Try going onto the GW website for some tips.

Well. Been away from posting for quite a while. That last post kind of disheartened my urge to share my work.
Now with 6th edition I'm building an eldar bastion and thought I would share the process.
So first off I gathered a cardboard tube from a bar of stainless steel at work and cut it in half. 3" in diameter and trimmed to 8" tall. The plywood base I had from a boat building project. A couple sheets of plasticard and a couple pieces of thick cardboard.
I also gathered up various sharp implements. Green stuff, some wooden cylinders, and a bit of duct tape.
I anchored the towers to the base with green stuff. Leaving finger lumps in the green stuff to help with the terrain look when I get to the basing.
Next I trimmed the plasticard in half. Drilled some holes for the brass brads. (Always fun to say.) I used duct tape to hold the tops of the towers together as I was flexing the plasticard between the towers to make a smooth but lobed shape to the base of the bastion.
Added brads along the side of the plasticard, both to hold it in place, and possibly to look rivet like if I leave it as is. I added green stuff along the edges of the plasticard, then repeated on the other side.
Used a piece of cardboard here for the upper deck. First I drew out a graph on the under side of the cardboard. Then my french curves to create a smooth shape oval in shape. I laid it on top of the towers and traced out where they would land. Placed green stuff around the circles I'd traced and pressed the upper deck in place. I think I've mimicked the Imperial bastion in dimensions. A touch taller and wider, but almost half the thickness. I'm going to add some crenelated covers around the upper deck for the troops that would be stationed up there. A twin linked scatter laser for my sky fire weapon. Then four shuricannons around the lower level as the automated weapons. Firing points for an interior squad, and a doorway down below of course. Possibly other various platforms and or curvy bits.
Hope to get some more work in on it tomorrow.

Finally had a chance to do some more work on the eldar bastion. Started out with working out how I wanted the ramparts on the upper level to look. Checked out a bunch of the eldar bastion pictures on google images. I really liked the ones with cut out walls and such, so I drew up graphs on a half sheet of plasticard. My wife did a free hand cut to give me a solid visual. (She's so amazing.) Used my french curves to mark out the shapes how I wanted, then cut with various razor knives. I used duct tape around the base of the upper level to create a set height that was nice and sticky to hold in place. I cut out the ramparts using quarters as the shape guide. Once the ramparts and the facade were in place, I used a couple little scraps of plasticard to make up the space between the facade and ramparts. I used my dremel to smooth the angle of the last facade cut out to the rampart. The sharper angles of the facade necessitated that I use a thin hobby knife to clean up the cut outs I made. When I placed a miniature at the ramparts it looked pretty good, but if he was standing a little back he wouldn't be able to see out. Much like the Imperial Bastion model has an issue with. Wanting this to make a little more sense, and to take advantage of making the upper works a little more detailed. I decided to make a slight rise in the center and at either end. My plan is to put the sky fire weapons emplacement in the center of the whole assembly. On either end I'm making steps down into an entrance for the bastion. I also have plans on setting up little balconies on either side for the lower weapon emplacements, and somewhere the doors to get in. Perhaps balconies will be on either end of the building, then the doorways in the long sides. Looking at the Imperial bastion it has heavy bolters and the quad gun up top. Not sure what the comparative Eldar weapons would be. Should it be a firestorm set up above. That would with the same vehicle if it ever hits the open market. However the Imperial weaponry is so much stronger at str 7. Can't even pen a space marine flyer with scatter lasers. I imagine Pulse lasers would be the closest to comparable. Slightly higher strength, but half the shots. Make it a twin linked pulse laser, if the shot or two does hit and pen, the ap 2 makes it more likely to do damage with the +1. Scatter lasers are more comparable to the heavy bolters I think, slightly higher strength, comparable range, higher rate of fire, but a much lower ap. The next weapon I would compare would be star cannons. Lower rate of fire, although the ap2 makes it a little over the top. Cost wise Shuricannons are about the same as most Imperial Heavy bolters when upgraded on a vehicle. However, it's much less range, and less on the ap for the same cost. I suppose that would be about right for an eldar bastion. Perhaps a pair of twin linked shuricannons that can cover 180 degrees? The range seems rough being only 24". Let me know what you guys think.
