What's the scale of the miniatures and a average man size?

The miniatures are 1/144. N-scale railroad (which is 10mm, iirc), is 1/148. And since we're talking about mecha, it's also the same scale as the smaller plastic kits that Bandai makes for Gundam (and other series - but mostly Gundam).

@Balance - Yes, I have, and the minis are pretty poorly painted and shot against busy, crowded backgrounds.

Your average Gear mini is about as tall as a Space Marine, though somewhat bulkier. Infantry are about 10mm tall.

It should be noted that older releases were much larger than 1/144.

One great thing about being close to n scale is the wealth of buildings and trains to use for terrain. Kato's stuff is great.

I do not yet have these figures, but the War Store site says that the infantry are 13 to 14mm tall.

A lot of people use n-scale or 15mm terrain. There's a lot of terrain made for FoW or other games that can be 'teched up' for Heavy Gear relatively easily.

The infantry are the smallest I've painted, but I'm not the greatest painter. My example above (of painting hundreds of minis) gives me nightmares.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I was looking at those infantry boxes and they are only 3 different poses in a box of 40 minis? Do they sell blisters with fewer minis?

The infantry come in blisters, and are not sold in smaller groups. I mention the use of the smaller blisters just to make it clear how tiny the infantry are for those that might not be aware. The rules don't allow less than a platoon in most cases, anyway, so it's generally a useful amount.

They're more like FoW minis than anything else, so three poses can go pretty far, and it's often 4-5 poses for those that come with an extra or two. I build mine by going through and extracting any 'squad leader' minis and other specialists, then making a pool of the remaining minis. Each squad gets three bases, and each abse gets three 'normal' minis. One base of the three gets an extra Squad Leader.

In game terms an infantry squad is 3 bases and exact numbers are not required (So some people hold out a few to get a few extra bases worth).

Infantry are interesting in HGB. As I said in an earlier post, they're armed with near-useless weapons, but can upgrade. They can be a good, cheap (in points) 'speedbump' as they're jsut scary enough that a Gear isn't going to feel comfortable leaving them behind, so the Gear has to spend time dealing with them.

Park infantry in a building (or even better a bunker) and they can be a cheap way to make a small region of the table risky.

There's a free one Samuli made for Windows at http://www.dp9.com/gear-garage. It's not "100%" int hat it doesn't support some of the Regiments of Note (Sub-sub-factions) and a few other oddities, but it's a great start.
