But yeah .. we don't know

So, the Golden men were some kind of nobility? The ruling class of Ancient Terra?

While the stone men were the early form of the AdMech, expert engineers and scientists (makes a lot of sense IMO).

But what of the restof the population? What of the normal people inhabiting the Sol System at the time? How were they called?

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.

Possibly, I was thinking more along the lines of thinkers and leaders, people who are able to lead and unite.

Although physically inferior to the Golden Race, and not of philosophical temperament and disposition, the Stone Men have in them the conjurations of great artifices and mechanisms. In time, the Golden Race looks to the stars to expand their dominion.

Perhaps they lack the drive and soul of the Golden Men.

However, once the burgeoning race of Mankind has taken its first steps into the greater cosmos, the Golden Race dwindles in influence through their dependence on the artifices of the Stone Race. This the Golden Age comes to an end and the Stone Men prevail.

This whole golden men stuff was introduced in what, third edition? It is questionable how much of this is relevant.

I'm still guessing Golden Men are some kind of primordial "super-pure LOTR" style humans that slowly died out. It doesn't make sense that the Stone Men are exclusively the Mars proto-Mechanicus.

Fluff for the Fluff God!

2nd edition as far as I am aware, but it still holds true as its not been re written. It might not have any relevance to the now of 40k, but it had relevance to the Dark Age of Technology and Age of Strife as it was the catalyst.

Perhaps not the actual proto Mechanicum but maybe the teachers of what would become it. All the Stone Men were apparently killed off during the Age of Strife

I beleive the reason it is known as the dark age is because the innovation and free thinking, also independance of the time is now greatly frowned upon in the imperium. It remindds me of the story "Anthem"
