I think that you've doen a fantastic job and your son will probably never forget the the army his Dad made him - well done!!
I especially love some of the conversion work like the flames coming out of the bcak of the missile launcher, chain bayonets on the bolters etc..
The painting is a bit too drybrushed for me though is perfectly passable as a decent, tidy job.
Keep up the good work and I hope they enjoy it as much as you seem to be.

Eldests 12, then 10 and 9, all startted when they were about 6 or 7 but the eldest never really took to it, bizarely he's into creative writing of all things, the younger two have phases, they may make nowt for months then you can't stop them (it probably the glue)
I had them police up all the kits in the house a couple of months back so I could store them together.
The GW stuff was almost entirely bough from their shops (ouch) but apart from a few of the ships and the two tanks on the top in red boxes the majority of the rest came from charity shops or car boot sales so where got for a quid or two a pop! At that price I don't mind them bodging them up!
The middle son has just finished a truk and sometime this week he'll be having his first spraying session. My compressor came with a couple of cheep chinese brushes I am letting them have.

Tom Automatically Appended Next Post: PS some of the boxes are stuffed full of other kits that didn't come with boxes, theres 3 mosquitos, at least 2 lancasters and about 3 hurricanes in there. It also doesn't include all the WWI planes I bought but never got around to doing which I don't let them near Automatically Appended Next Post: Yup, the dry brushing of the figures was a compromise as doing it the way i painted D&D figures back in the 80s, blending and so on would have just taken toooooo long, especially for something I don't play myself. The middle lad has some 28mm Parlimentary infantry from Christmas which is far more my thing so I'll be going to town on those when I've finished this lot.
Just to date myself some of the enamel paints I am still using are from about 1985.... OK a few went off but l most survived as they were sealed well.
What I'd like to do is get more practice with the airbrushes as what i've seen some guys doing is really inspiring. Not that I'd ever get that good but I think its the way to go.
By the by if you look closely the paint chips of the Flamer armed rhino reveal the beast was orginally Salamander green... I've threaned to arm one of the Tech marines with a hand flamer modded into a spray gun and a big power file for removing serials...

Those all look great, you're clearly a very talented modeler and painter. But honestly, I can't help but be a little disappointed that your eldest son isn't taking part in one of the most satisfying and fulfilling parts of the hobby himself.

Yeah, I wished he was into the modelling side and i am refusing to do the Terminators so he is doing them after a fashion but the younger two show some promise and I am deliberately not helping them much except to show how and getting them stuff to practice on.

I started playing 40k when I was very young too, (4th grade or 9 years old i think) although my dad is into slot cars and has never done much at all with wargaming, only some painting of the cars and making some scenery for his slot car tracks. I hated painting for a long, long time, it was just work that I had to slog through to play the game that intrigued me so much. Finally, when I was older (maybe 14 or 15) I got a bit better at it and I started to enjoy it once I was truly proud of the results. Point is, I would keep encouraging your son to paint and try a hand at it. Maybe when he is a bit older he'll appreciate it more.

Nice collection of stuff you have there. The marines color scheme is strikingly similar to one that I painted almost 10 years ago!

Cheers! I'm a bit leary of coming on to strong and making him do more of his own stuff but I think he is really missing out. I'll keep making sure that there's plenty of materials and tools for them all. Thankfully the charity shops over here are a good source of cheap models, today I got 6 unmade Airfix plane kits for £7 the lot and turned my nose up at a couple more that were either too advanced for them or they wanted a whole £3.50 for (call me Mr Cheap!)
Yeah I thought the pale blue and red worked well, personally I wanted to do them in camouflage colours to match the board but that was vetoed!

Leary of making him do too much of his own stuff? Whose hobby is it in the first place? My dad would have laughed in my face if I had asked him to paint up my old Necron army...anyways, whatever floats your boat. I guess it is a nice way for you to exercise your painting and modelling abilities, but if I were in your shoes I would put that to use building a massive army to take on my sons with!

No, leary of forcing him to model at all, which would put him off for life. Also the idea of him ruining GW stuff while he learned at the prices they charge brought me out in a rash!
The worst thing is he didn't ask, i volunteered!
D'oh!

Haha well you seem to be having fun with it regardless. Definitely a cool dad. But as for ruining them, you can always strip models...once I figured out how the first thing I did was strip my 4th grade Necrons and repaint them
