Footdat can be competitive, although they aren't top tier because they are susceptible to certain builds. Leaf blower and mech deldar can be a near auto lose match up if you don't play very conservatively. Footdar is a super fun army to play though, due to all the synergism between the units.

I just played in the throne of skulls tournament in Vegas and went 2-0-1 on the first day against grey knights, mech blood angels, and dual lash/oblit/pms. I missed day 2 though due to the distractions of Vegas. I have also won a very competitive tournament against some tough lists with good players at the slo ironman. That's not to say I'm Mr awesome or anything, just that you can win with footdar consistantly if you play smart.

Good luck with it!

Another tip I've learned from playing my own footdar lists is that they play better when they stick together. The minute you start splitting units away to either camp on objectives or go take others they lose the support of the masses and die fairly quickly.

I would also say that from experience if you leave your harlies out front as mobile cover the harlies will die to anything that can get close to them and fart. YMMV on this one.

Someone asked for a list? Here's one I made a couple of weeks back and ended up against GKS.

Eldrad
Avatar

10 banshees, exarch, executioner, war shout, acrobatic
6 Dragons
6 Dragons

10 avengers, exarch, dual catapults, bladestorm
5 Pathfinders
6 jetbikes, 2 x cannons
10 guardians, EML
10 guardians, EML

6 spiders, exarxh, dual spinners, withdraw
6 spiders, exarch, dual spinners, withdraw
5 Hawks, exarch, intercept

3 War walkers, each 2x scatter lasers.

Opponents fielded 2 LR crusaders, 2 10 man squads of knights, 5 terminators, couple of inquisitors, 2 ven dreads, and the baby carrier models that looks terrible. Ended a draw as the hawks rolled 1's and 2' for hitting with grenades and the fire dragons couldn't hit the broad side of the barn that game. Was still fun, though not the list I would have liked to have played as half my army is being stripped again. (£5 tops to strip a load of models, 25% cheaper than buying new ones to paint, I know what I'll be doing to keep painting )

I actually took this list for the following reasons:
Had been reminising about 2nd ed, back then eldar didn't exactly have tanks till later in the edition, they were pretty much foot sloggers.
Hawks back then were actually worrying for your opponent, dropping STR 6 krak grenades on units with a -3 save modifier with flying over them or a frag granade str 4 -1 save, 2" template. I wanted to use them again for nostalgia.
I wanted to see if I could find a use for what is seen as a "poor" unit so had decided to include one minimum as a challenge, ended up I took 3
My RT/2nd ed storn guardians were bare metal and plastic and unassembled
Was sick of seeing special characters, wanted to annoy people back with one.

Stars of the show were the banshees denying saves, pathfinders sitting with a 2+ cover save and the AP 1 shots, warp spiders on dreads rear armour, avangers bladestorming some GK's into oblivion (love your guide and doom combo eldar players, cherish it and cackle evilly) and the avatar when he finally made it into combat, ripping apart a dread and unit of GK's with their inquisitor.
The rest either got shot to ribbons as the opponent had set the table up with little terrain (typical marine player behaviour?) and bad dice rolls involved. Guardians pretty much became assault cannon fodder their EML's doing maybe 1 wound on the knight baby carrier (which made an insane amount of 5++ saves during the game, my opponent was surprised it managed to last) or the units performed averagely doing what they do best.

If I was tweaking the list the defenders would be replaced with storm squards with fusion gun and flamer in each and a lock with destructor in each also. Since this would cost more a unit somewhere would have to go. With more reliable anti tank shots available in a footsloggers list I'd drop at least 1 unit of dragons for scorpions or harlequins too, maybe next codex .

Would be interested to see other peoples ideas for lists also, working on a couple more at the moment to use in the future each ignoring the transport option (expensive anyways) and limiting the heavy support amount of grav tanks, to maybe one list using a couple.
Currently working with a list starting off with reapers and war walkers as its starting point.

My big question is, how is it costing you £5 to strip a model? I strip my models basically for free (since I already paid for my jar of simple green).

It's not per model . I specifically buy stuff to strip models. A tin of nitromors for metals costs me around £5, and thats the only reason I buy it. It'sd perhaps a couple of pounds to strip the plastics with acetone free nail polish remover. but the stuff stinks to high heaven. I assume you use simple green for more than stripping models?

Thank you all for your advice,

When i use Footdar i use Eldrad and usually an Avatar aswell.

I have 2 sets of war walkers with 6 scatter lasers each squad which i guide with Eldrad. As troops i use dire avengers.

Even if i do try our mechdar i'm pretty sure i will keep the war walkers because the look on an opponents face when i pick up 48 twin linked s6 dice is just priceless

But again thank you to all of you for your input, it has really helped me to decide what to do.

I've won both a league and a tournament with horde eldar.

My list:

Autaurch Jetbike, banshi mask, laser lance, surrican cannon
Avatar
x4 20 guardians, scatter laser, warlock, conceal
x1 10 storm guardians, warlock, enhance
x3 jetbikes , 1x surrican cannon (ride with autarch)
x3 wraithlords, sword, x2 flamers, surrican cannon
spirit seer, enhance
viper squadron of 2 with stones and surrican cannon
viper with stones and scatter laser
viper with stones and scatter laser

2000 pts.
to drop to 1850 I drop the viper squadron and stone off the other 2 vipers.

This army is incredibly viscious, as you are looking at 90 fearless guardians, 3 wraithlords, and an avatar. Not to mention the autarch and his bikers zooming about waiting to counter punch. What makes this army work is that any enemy will have to attend to all three aspects of the force. You can't ignore 90 guardians with x4 scatter lasers, fearless, and swarming into you with an assault 2 weapon then charge. You can't ignore the 3 wraithlords hunting down your MC and armor using the Str10 punch with a reroll sword--facing hordes is a snap with 6 flamers thank you very much; did I mention I run the 3 lords in a triangle in front of the avatar effectively giving the CC god a cover save while he lumbers across the field? Oh yes and lest we forget the vipers and bikes sniping at long and medium range to annoy and take out light vehicles.

I'll take some pictures, because to see it on the table is a thing of awe. There is so much to shoot at, most enemy armies are simply not equipped with the volume of fire necessary to take this army out.
