I think it is ok, but just ok. We are still 4 episodes in and know very little about what is going on. I feel they are stretching it out, not as bad as lost or V mind you, but they are stretching it out. I mean I just don't know enough about the aliens yet to really feel involved.

I like that they break the traditional boundaries of who lives and who dies regardless of their importance. the whole superhero portion of main charactors gets kind of old.
I don't see any boundries broken, they're going with really standard predictable stuff. I really wish they weren't, but the only suprise I had from the deaths was that they were so standard.
SPOILER ALERT even though most of this is stuff you can guess.
Spoiler:
You know the main guy is safe unless the actor decides to leave, and nothing more than an episode or two of 'missing' will happen to his son since he lived through the pilot, unless of course his actor decides to leave. The pediatrician back at the base is also about 95% safe, I'll be really surprised if she bites it. The commander is probably around for a while, but has a decent chance of dying with a change of heart in the last or second to last episode of the season.
There were two black guys in the group to start off with. If you're a minority and find another one of your race in the cast of a show like this, you better make sure the other guy dies, because one of you is going to bite it. (Not both, that would remove the demographic representation). Guess which guy takes some arrows to the chest to establish that they're in real danger?
There was a kid who screwed up, he didn't die but had to leave the group because he wasn't as good as the rest of the team. He will come back and learn to be better later, by the end of the season he will sneak out on a mission he's not supposed to go on and save the team.
The love interest and the son got into danger, and so of course the love interest got captured (not killed) and the son came back feeling guilty. This means he won't pursue the other girl in the triangle, while the captured girl will be rescued by the end of the season. She might die in the finale, not before that.
They went to rescue the main guy's other son (on about 4 different episodes so far), but because of one guy getting over eager they were forced to rescue a different kid for the sure-fire surgery to save him. This of course means that the surgery would not save him, rescuing the 'not the main character's kid' is pretty much a death sentence. Sure enough the kid was dead, though he did manage to last until the next episode before keeling over.
The scummy but sort-of-likeable leader of the criminal band of course survived his gang dying. They did a fake-out like he might have a rquick edemption arc, but then sent him out in the wild so of course he escaped. He's going to come back later in the season with a change of heart, there's about a 50-50 whether he sacrifices himself nobly, or just saves someone and gets allowed into the group.
Sure enough the kid was dead, though he did manage to last until the next episode before keeling over.
Did he? Are you sure? I must have missed that part, I thought he was still alive. Hence why they went and got the rest of the kids.Did I miss something?

I haven't watched the most recent episode yet. In the one where the alien first talks through the kid (latest one I've seen), the father rips the harness off, and the kid twitches and stops moving, and he says something like 'it's no life being in one of those'. I presumed he was dead since they earlier said you couldn't just yank the harness off without killing the person, and needed the surgical technique to break those spines.
Sending the doctor in to show his 'technique' doesn't make a lot of sense if 'dose the kid with morphine, yank the harness off with your bare hands' works fine for getting one off.

it's too predictable but so far we are liking it enough to keep watching. if it gets V-stupid we'll shut it off but so far it's been decent enough. My GF always has to point out how no one has showered like like a year, yet they all have perfect hair and makeup.

I'm the same way, I don't dislike it and I'm hoping it grows on me enough that the predictable and schmaltzy stuff doesn't turn me off. I loved Babylon 5 but they did have some howlers, like the 'top agents use guns that have a giant label saying WARNING I R SEKRIT AGENT inside', so I don't think I'm unfair on that count.
About dirt, I expect people to only be 'TV dirty', where their clothes are a bit scruffy, not pressed, and have occasional streaks of dirt. You're not going to see super-greasy unstyled hair, men with more than five o'clock shadow, women with hairy legs and pits and no makeup, stained and patched clothes, badly wrinkled from being slept in, and other stuff in most TV shows. Realistic griminess for people spending days out scouting doesn't make good TV.
Have they found out if the mechs are driven by enslaved children yet?
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Haven't seen the latest episode, we DVR it and watch on on saturdays.. some of my predections..
Spoiler:
The captive alien will somehow escape, and murder 3 or 4 one-liner extras, but it will let the doctor lady live because she's nice to it. Even though it had it's legs blown clean off, it will skitter away just fine.
also
Spoiler:
The aliens will realize the main guy wants his son, so they'll let him be rescued, but make him be a spy like the kid from the old V the Final Battle who the V's let out so he could spy on Mark Singer
