I play DW/RW and even though Belial is one of the weaker heroes he lets your WHOLE army be terminators. So that in itself is pretty powerful. Same with Logan I believe although Logan can hold his own much better.

I also play Orks and I LOVE Gazzy even though I have never had the chance to use him. His stats are monstrous! But I do dred bash/line with mekboyz so :/

If you are going for a single character that can murder anything I'd go with Gazzy, Mephiston, GK guy (forgot his name already wow), Kharne, Necron god dudes etc.

If you want a support hero that will help your whole army i'd say Njal is pretty dang good. Sammael and Belial for sure because they allow bikes and terminators to be troops respectively. Vulkan, Emperor's Champ (maybe not named), Eldrad, Khan (BIKES!)

You get the idea. It kind of depends on your style and your army in my opinion.

I am a fan of Marneus Calgar - the ability to pass or fail any morale test for the entire army is pretty strong, especially since if you choose to pass, you aren't considered fearless and don't have to take extra tests. That ability right there is what armies that are fearless wish they had instead Pedro Kantor is also nice in an army list that uses a lot of sternguards, especially if you can keep him close to the leading edge of your army so you benefit from his +1 attack special. Vulkanis nice for the TL meltas/flamers. The rest of the SM characters aren't really worth the points IMO. I don't see any really useful characters in the Tau codex either - stubborn for all units in LOS of Aun'va would be nice except you really don't want your fire warriors sticking around in combat. A close combat character? In a Tau list? Thanks, but i'll pass. If Shadowsun had different weapons options she might be appealing, but 12" weapons on your commander is a little too close to the enemy for my tastes in a Tau army.

Also i am afraid that mephiston is out in my book too. Unit of 1, with no invuln. Last two times i faced him i just shot him dead before he could do anything.

I got to ask, how many units fired at him to kill him, and how many turns did it take?

Mephiston takes a few tactics to use. You can't just run him head first in front of the army. You need to use an assault squad as cover for him.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

Chaos: Skulltaker and Kairos. Skulltaker is awesome. If you don't have eternal warrior, you're toast. Bye bye Nids...

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Mephiston is best in a mech list, where he can hide behind vehicles, then fly out and ruin stuff without mass Power Weapons. He's basically a flying Monstrous Creature with a Psychic Hood who can get cover saves easily and has frag grenades.

Today we are actually having a sort of hero deathmatch at my local GW. SO maybe I after that I can come back with some definitive results haha.

I will be using Lysander for my hero. I had the model lying around and thought i'd challenge myself and paint him up (so much yellow!). Here's a link if you are interested

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/378619.page

Anywho, I chose Lysander because he's tough as nails and hits like a truck. 4 wounds with eternal warrior, a 2+3++, and a s10 thunder hammer sound pretty damn good when fighting another hero. But that's just me.

I think that depends on the Army honestly. While I can certainly agree with some armies, others have great Named Characters! Blood Angels for example have an awesome array of named dudes along with DE. For their prices I think they can justify themselves in returns during a fight.

Tau - Erm... let's just pretend Tau don't have any SCs. Shadowsun sucks, Space Pope sucks, Farsight is sub-par seeing as a single battlecannon shot will STILL ruin your day (seeing as though bodyguard suits have to stick with Farsight, it makes them even more prone to blast templates, and it's doubtful that you'll have enough shield drones to take all the hits scored unless you went the whole hog and got all 7 of your suits shield drones (the whole unit at this point costs 625pts before necessary weapons/support systems), in which case, you probably won't have much else in your army).

Despite being a template magnet, it's also a VERY unwieldy unit. Ever tried to hide a squad of 8 models on terminator bases that are about as tall as the old metal Daemon Prince? Something tells me that wall in the middle of the board aint gunna cut it. It also creates LoS issues; unless you're content with conga-lining up the board, everything behind the unit is gunna have trouble unless they're on raised terrain.

"All your eggs in one basket" springs to mind here...

Chaos - Khârn and Abaddon.

Eldar - Pretty much just Eldrad and the Avatar.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Creed and Straken are brutal, if used in supporting lists built around them. Yarrick can also do work if supported well (cough Ogryns).

Abaddon is a beast, as is Kharn.

Vulkan rocks, as does Lysander and Shrike.

My vote goes to Helbrecht. The guy is just pure win for 175 points (Though, he takes another several hundred to really make himself good...)

Eldrad, also awesomesauce.

Surprised I am the first to mention it (unless I missed it) but Ragnar Blackmane.

I've always loved Grimaldus, and thought he was a lot better than that steaming pile of garbage Helbrecht.

I can't believe I forgot Eldrad... he's got a massive "annoy the piss out of you" factor.

Ok I just got back from a 40k deathmatch where it was a series of 1v1 matches that were divided into light, medium, and heavy weight. The end results in heavyweight were

1-draigo
2-Lysander (me)
3- Logan Grimnar
4- Marneus Calgar
5- Dante

I think people seriously underestimate Lysander. He is 200 points and hits like a truck and is sturdy as a rock. He is pretty reliable and him in a squad with bolters in cover is pretty much unshakeable. But that's just my opinion.

For his price, Sammael is also OK in certain situations. Against slower power armoured armies, he can drop multiple plasma templates on them and avoid giving them cover saves by finding firing lanes and flying above cover etc. He will probably die, but he can sometimes get his points back + he gives you the ability to use bikes. Him and Belial as a hero combo are pretty effective IMO

Helbrecht is good because the Sword of the High Marshals works even if he gets charged. When combined with his I5 and rerolls in CC you get a guy who will make MEQ units think twice about charging you. The combi-melta and the Ld 10 across the board on a durable guy is icing on the cake. I just wish he had EW...

Grimaldus is hilarious when he pops his relic to buff a charging Blob. 79 normal attacks with rerolls to hit plus any special weapons will whipe most enemies from the board.
