Fact.

I must say im pretty lucky to only live a half hour away from minature markets brick and mortar and about ten minutes from there wharehouse. But still there are some not so good stores around here. One is a local chain with 3-4 stores in the area(if you live around st.louis you know it) they are the closest to my house but never have anything I need. They only have a 7x5 wall for 40k and most,of it is sm or IG. There are 3 ork boxes and 1 necron. They never had the current codex's (there still selling codex:dameon hunters) and I always get well our store an hour away has it you can go get it there.

Sorry Chris, but no. It's very hard to convince the police to take minor copyright infringement seriously, and in vaguely legal terms, infringing copyright is a civil offence, not a criminal offence. Downloading music, books, whatever is highly unlikely to even get the police out to your house, let alone charge you.

Blah blah, semantics, blah.

The point is copyright infringement is against the law.

Most hated store I had experience with was run by and old lady with a chip on her shoulder. It was red dragon games or something in UT. I went in and asked when people got together to play games. She ignored me for awhile and then I asked about 40k, was it popular or did her store focus on other games like magic and 40k. She looked at mea and said that was personal or critical information for her business and that I was "stupid" to even ask her that question. So I acknowledged that I had made a mistake and said sorry. Asked her again when people came in to play usually. She got really huffy and said that a schedule was posted and then under her breath mumbled about incompetent idiots etc. I left pretty quickly after that.

A few months later I went back to see what was going on and maybe chalk it up to a bad day, but got the same reactions from different questions. I asked about ordering stuff whether she would want a pre-payment or if she would order and then put it on the shelf etc. She said well of course a pre-payment would be needed, why else would she order something no one else would want and then just put it on her shelf. What kind of store did I think she was running?" I forget what exactly she called me at that point but it wasn't polite at all. The only time she was cordial is when she was talking about how well some of the gamers at her store did something like painting or drawing I can't remember exactly but what I do remember is how aggressive and rude she was towards me.

The local shop here is great. In there usually 3 days a week, with 2 of those being pretty much every hour I am not working. Owner is a great guy, and we all somewhat pitch in to help out when we can for him.

Most of the people are great too. Only a few people I can't stand. One is an ork/eldar player who just bugs me by the way he acts. Seems to make up rules, which doesn't help the other newer players. One is a BA player who just needs to spend some time learning rules better and the fact that none of us really care about what special rules his army has. The third is just a guy I just don't like. I kinda knew him in high school. He knows his stuff at least.

There is another store close, Misty Mountain (which is moving and changing its name), that I did not enjoy being at. The staff was alright. The people playing 40k at the time kinda seemed angry that we were even there looking at them.

Our local clubs is on its last legs... when I say local I mean its a 2hour drive each way... due to loss of members to university and other life situations.

However, the local GW store is gaining a good rep. Only problem is it has only a quarter of the tables, if that.

I might need to move to a major city if I am to continue the gaming aspect of the hobby.

My local GW stores have 2 tables max, and they usually are used every time I go in for a game, which means I have to go and game on fecking dining table battles which are 3ft by 5 foot, guess which way the Orks player likes it?

Thank goodness I've built up the biggest terrain collection in my GW over the years, including a full box of necromunda terrain and some old school space hulk stuff.

My FLGS is Games Workshop. I had one disagreement with the manager over viewing the Dark Eldar Codex pre-release but he was sound and we discussed it. Now I get on pretty well with the GW staff there. They have tables to run games but I'm not one for playing in a store.

I had issues with other LGS, one doesn't really have great stock of anything and another is not that local. Hence my only real FLGS is Games Workshop.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I bring up general topics about GW with my local manager, I we were talking about the mould process, and I said about the flaws with finecast. He went off on one, bringing loads of boxes off the sheleves to prove his point, that had nothing to do with what he said. He is pretty good apart from the fact that if you have one minor disagreement, he starts shouting, and I mean shouting and doesn't let you get a word in, it really gets on my wick.

Our local metro has 5 game stores with 3 being within a 20-25 minute drive of my house, and 2 being a bit further out (about double that due to normal highway traffic).

I will say that without a doubt 3 of those stores are top notch, 1 is an irritation, and 1 has an outright negative reputation among our local club.

The irritation happens to be the closest shop to my house. It stems from when my local club was running 40k events for them on a regular basis. I want to say up front we handled everything. The store provided nothing but space, while all of the proceeds from the tournament entry was put into gift certificates for the store for every event that wasn't directly supported out of the quarterly tournament allowance fund. This means that our club provided the terrain, and all of the other logistics (judges, mission sheets). We were quite popular, and had to deal with limited space which capped us at 16 people. Fitting that many was an extremely packed gaming space with me doing record keeping sitting on the floor. Since we were repeatedly filling the space, and had people traveling from up to 2 hours away to attend, we opened up pre-registration on our website to ensure that those who were traveling would receive a spot. The people driving in don't have a local game store, so whenever they were in the store they would spend a decent amount, to last until the next trip up. On the day of the particular incident, the people who had driven in had each spent at least 100 dollars in the store each (4 people, so $400 minimum). Plus we once again filled the gaming space, so another $160.00 in gift certificates sold. Because we had started taking pre-regs, the store told us that they could no longer provide "free" space to us, and wanted a $100 fee from now on for each tournament. He gave the pre-reg as one reason, and the $100 figure was his estimate on his "lost" revenue from the Magic players that would have bought cards if there was table space on 40k tournament days. This was told to us on a day when our tournament brought in $500+ in revenue. We said no thanks, and haven't run an event at the store since. Because I still pop in every so often, and am friendly to the random counter staff (the owner was the one requesting we start paying fees) always inquiring if anything has been planned, since I would support the effort to get someone thing going again, but won't take on the amount of work, and then basically have to pay them for the priviledge of doing so, I know that they haven't had any 40k events in the store, and aren't moving much product for it either due to this.

I respect the guys right to run his business how he sees fit, but driving away a monthly source of decent revenue is not the smartest business model. As a footnote, the store was in a popular, heavily foot trafficked shopping area. It's now in a terrible location (for traffic, not for me as it's an easier drive) which I can only guess was due to cost of rent in the other space.

The store with the negative reputation is one I have never been to personally and never will now. Many of our locals started playing there when it first opened to try to support it, but after numerous occurrences of them being screwed out of prize support, or just terribly biased officiating in tournaments. Basically the rule amongst those that still play in the store from our group is that any prize support/gift certificate is spent the minute it's gained.

On topic, my local store, when I did have one, was dank, dark, smelled, and had an owner who was far more interested in Warcrafting then actually interacting with or servicing customers.

having a pirated codex is more like, having a pirated DVD. selling crack is a Federal offense and will land you in deep juju, having a single pirated DVD will probably get you a slap on the hand and confiscation of the property.

What the heck Ouze?! The thread was finally past that garbage and getting good then you go and stick your hand down the u-bend in case the flush didn't get rid of it all.

On topic i quite like GW Aberdeen, sure i've had two instances of buying a white dwarf just to make them shut up about it but overall i very much like the guys that work there. They always acknowledge your entry and are happy to talk. I had a discussion last time i was there for about an hour, bantering about his spam lists, recommending he check out my dakka Plog and even Minecraft! He even offered a game next time i visited.

I went to a games store once, really scruufy place and the two fellers in there did the stereotypical carried on playing their game ignore me thing, twas cool as I wanted to just mooch around and pick stuff out.

When I had a load of GW/FoW stuff they sort of rolled their eyes to each other and then one of them served me.

A bit weird but no hassle, the really weird thing is I have seen them now working in a well known ingternet retailer/store. They are pretty normal, helpful and chatty now?

My guess is its comes from whomever is running the show. They were in a grubby store and didn't bother that hard, they went to a good place and stepped up to the mark.

Living in the same area, I've never actually made it to Miniature Markets, but I've never had the expectation that an FLGS would have every last thing GW makes.

Also, the last 3 times I've been into their St. Charles store, they've always had every codex there. Maybe you've just had the bad luck of showing up whenever there's a run on a particular army?
