heh I felt the same way when I got my thousand sons. Tactic wise its usually better to go with a greater deamon for an HQ these days, but if you ever decide to get interested in battling and want a big modeling venture, you really need to pick up a defiler. Its a great model with lots of fun ways to customize , a great custom unit that chaos has, and its great on the tabletop. If you like the different gods as a whole, the four different troop choices (khorne, thousand sons, plauge, and noise) also work very well together, but those are just some things to consider while your collecting. The most important thing is that you get the models you like, and have fun. maybe after watching a few games of your family and as you get a feel for the rules, you might come to realize just how awesome some of your chaos powers are. I know that after watching a few games at play, I really started to see just what the powers in my book do and now I'm a complete tactics adict.

This site and your fellow wargamers are you best resource and I hope you enjoy the site, Dakknaut!

Welcome aboard!

It's super awesome to hear that your whole family is into the game! I hope everyone's interest holds the test of time!

I myself also play chaos and have for years! Excellent choice

I second the *get a Daemon Prince /w wings for an HQ* they are bar none the best HQ out there below 2000pts.

Do you have a goal for what you want to do with your army? How many points do you want to play for now? Are you concerened with being competetive or would you rather just have fun with the game?

There are lots of army list suggestions in the *army lists* (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/14.page) section as well as some good articles in the *40k tactica* (http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Category:Warhammer_40%2C000_Tactics) section to look at.

There is a lot there to digest but most of it is worthwhile

If you want any tips other than that feel free to PM me if you like, I'm always willing to give advice to a fellow Follower of The Dark Gods

Happy Hammering

Welcome! There's a few other family-based people, here, the most well known (I suspect) is Gitspitta. His painting log (plog) is very long (over 200 pages), but well worth the read. He also has two other ongoing threads, talking about painting and gaming with his two sons.

I agree about GW, but, alas, this is the way of the business, now. The best advice I can give you is to start out with a 4' x 4' table, and build enough terrain to cover 1/4th of it. Make it a mix of ruined buildings and woods. Each person in your household should make a 500 point army, with one HQ, and two troop choices. Use the rest of the points to buy a fourth unit. You should be able to make this with the contents of your Battleforces.

Play some games, have some fun. Don't stress out over the rules. Encourage everyone to make up some background for their armies, and a story about why you're fighting over a 4' x 4' chunk of land.

Finally, pick up off of eBay some of the 40k "Assault on Black Reach" rulebooks. These small books carry the entire ruleset, and are worth their weight in gold.

Good luck!

I love your story, what a great way to indulge in a new hobby! The bonus to having your entire family participate is that you can always bond and have family time and you will never go into periods where you cant find anyone to play! I hope you enjoy the hobby aspect as much as I do! Typically with 40k you are going to find one immutable fact to be true; that either you collect for the sake of hobbying or collect for the sake of playing, rarely will you find a person that embraces both equally. I am a hobbyist first and I can play the game for fun, but im certainly not overly competative with it.

ChaosMom wrote:but it would be nice to have some suggestions for beginners on how to assemble a well balanced army.

You are right about the ommision of guidelines or suggestions when it comes to building your army. Simply put it just sucks, especially considering the amount of money you will invest in GW. But, I believe its done because there is no army or list that doesnt have its weak points. In the older editions, they used to put strengths and weaknesses of each force in their codex along with tactics...and it did help. As bad as it sounds, its either a choice to go down the road of trial and error, or find a list on the internet that everyone is running and build it. If I might make a suggestion to building armies and choosing units and points values:

1- with such a big family and everyone playing and collecting, im sure you would like to hang onto some of your disposable income and not liquidate all of it to GW. My first suggestion would be to cap your points lists at 500 or what are commonly called taskforces. This will allow each of you to play a good sized game using a few troop units, an HQ choice, and a unit or two of your own preference. Furthermore this makes the games manageable and less time consuming. Everyone starts out and wants to jump right into 3k point games....but to be honest, I find smaller games more fun and less of a drag.

2- Grab your codex and play test units. You can do this with a handful of dice and a few models of any type, just as long as you can differentiate the good/bad sides. Spend some time rolling attacks to hit and to wound, see how the unit fairs. Do this several times as well, never base your assumption of a unit off of a single combat interaction. Find choices that you enjoy to play and that work with your style of play. This will really direct your needs and interests as you build your army. For example, if your playing your son's Tyranids army, you will find it is much more beneficial to take a heavy bolter, or missile launcher than a lascannon for your heavy weapons choice.

3- Many players (including myself) make the mistake of wanting to buy an entire 1500pt army before even trying it out or seeing how the army plays. Every army will handle itself differently and incorporate unique tactics/abilities. My advice would be for all of you to take your time painting and building your army's. Play with what you have for now and play many games before you decide what unit you are lacking. Its easy to get caught up in buying more models than you can handle at once or buying unecessary models (which I seem to have a knack for doing) :(.

4- Going back to playing small armys, I would also recommend each of you just playing a single unit for now (typically about 170 pts each). It will instill the basics of the game, keep your rule referencing to a minimum, and keep your 7 yr olds attention spand on the game and not getting bored with it.

I wish you all the best of luck and a great time in your endeavors with 40k.

First of all Welcome ChaosMom and family. Next I fully agree with what Briancj Wrote: This is how I learned to play this game and fully believe that when you have mastered the 500 point army everything else comes so much easier.
