The distinction is that people don't appear to watch TV because they believe they should watch TV, they watch TV because they want to be entertained, and find TV entertaining.

And comforting and easy, yes. I wasn't claiming that people watch TV out of any sense of obligation to watch TV. But I think there's a different mind-set between people who enjoy watching TV and will flip between programmes to find something to watch, and people who enjoy certain shows and just watch TV as a means to see those shows.
