This was supposedly an effort to encourage new painters, as even the 'Eavy Metal stuff didn't look that good. This changed in 4th more to the style we have now.
Anyway, bit of a history lesson for all y'all.
There was also the attempted introduction of the Fanatic Painting scheme in 2004; where they were recruiting part-timers to paint for the Specialist games range who would get 'paid' by keeping the models they were sent to paint... but it never really took off.
There are a few current 'Eavy metal paintjobs that are quite bad of late as well. (Darn the website is down atm, was going to find an example.) The old DE scheme I have to agree was just agony to look at.

Fair enough

Well, it's no busier than the sister dialogus..but I agree with you on the highlighting. This is quite an old paintjob tbh, and I'm not keen on painting black anyway.
balsak_da_mighty wrote: I still feel the Eavy Metal stuff that were shown are far better then yours, well except for the scourge, that is pretty bad.
I do applaud what you have shown.
Ouch, a little harsh I think. Yes, the highlighting is gak on the armour but FAR worse than the shown 'eavy metal stuff? Ignoring the armour highlights, the rest isn't that bad is it?
I'm not claiming to be an 'eavy metal level painter, only that I can paint detailed scrolls, but to be told that their 'worst' paintjobs are not only better but far better than mine because I screwed up some highlights is a little disheartening..I do appreciate your honesty though, so thank you for that

Is that how we ended up with such charming pieces as Sgt. Dorian Gray? I left the hobby a bit after Inquisitor launched and I thought it was rather mystifying how crappy some of the later models look compared to Eisenhorn or Covenant

That is far better than any other model in this thread.

Nice how the thread has gone from criticising 'Eavy Metal minis toward giving BrotherOmas painting advice ;P

If we can include models that don't fit the fluff I humbly submit Cypher and Astorath. Both are technically painted well, neither are the right color.

From memory, there's been at least two studio versions of Cypher, one in green armour and one in black.
As to which fits the fluff, that's actually a little tricky since if he's actually a Fallen Angel you would expect him to be in black, but his own fluff mentions his green armour.
Put it down to just a part of the mystery...

I'm not buying the "back in the day" I keep hearing. Here's a history of just the USA Golden Demon winners. Yes, paint quality/technique is higher these days, but fantastic level stuff was still on the street "back when".
I know Mark Dance, and got to see his GD stuff from back in the 90s, a few months back. It is very impressive, but in his own words, he thinks the quality of the work today surpasses what he did back then.

This thread made me realize how boringly based most 'Eavy Metal models are, but I guess that can be chalked up to not wanting to detract from the model.
