Lets talk suit loadouts.
FireKnife:(MP/PR/MT) "Jack of all trades, master of none." so true. You can do damege to everything, but they arent realy effective against anything.
Deathrain:(TLMP/TA) realy good agains vehicles. Not much more to say.
Bladestorm:(BC/PR/MT) outmaches FireKnife in everything at a lower point cost, but canot kill vehicles and have a lower range.
Firestorm:(BC/MP/MT) good against hordes and vehicles at a realy low pointcost. Like lower AP fireknifes.
Heatwave:(TLFlamer) rapes everything exept TEQ but at an exteremely short range.
Helios:(FB/PR/MT) awsome against MEQ and TEQ but at a close range.

Which may be longer than it should, if they do CSM after necrons instead of Tau *grumble*

The major thing missing from this thread is that tau are a combined arms army. Focus your fire and use target selection against the threatening targets.
Suit choice depends on your play style as well as on how you build the army. I've done fairly good against different list types before I got bored with tau. I have not used them in about 8 months but the basic tactics are the same.
Avoid assault. If you need to use kroot to assault since you can take on a lot of unit but not combat oriented squads. This is the bucket of dice theory. a squad should be at least 15 other wise you do not have enough dice to cause effective amounts of wounds. Use forests and take advantage of cover. Also avoid flamers.
Fire warriors are effective at 12" but need support. Use pathfinders took strip cover off units with armor off 5+. Improve ballistics. steal pathfinders devil fish.
Path finders need multiple small squads. Take 2. These are your support. Take piranhas with seeker missiles and move all out to get side armor shots and block movement.
helios and deathrains work. specialize your suits for a combat role. Fire knives are costly and fulfill multiple roles making them less effective for what they need to do.
Take target locks on broadsides. Take multi trackers on hammer heads. 2 burst canons and a rail gun from a hammer head is death to horde armies. Broadsides are tank hunters hammerheads are horde hunters.
Try out different units and magnetize those suits. Automatically Appended Next Post: One other thing I love is the shas'el with cib and afp. Add a ta and shield drone with hwmt. I've used it for over 2 years.

Here's how I went 5 and 3 at the nova open only losing to Dash of pepper (barely), a greyknight (barely... but i think it was a rules "mistake" on his part), and a Decent of Angels list...
focus fire on the easy targets first....
Rail guns aim for the AV10 and 11 before the 14....
keep spread out to minimize casualties (most other armies work best in bunches like a fist)....
Use pirahnas to block movement and annoy.
Kroot are your go to unit. using them right wins and loses games. Properly outflanking them, infiltrating them, or deploying them changes everything.

After reading this thread, It appears I have a CRAP ton of stuff to learn about using my Tau. I've lost more than half games now but I'm nailing down my tactics more and more and understanding via seeing it played out whats good to do/use against what.
I see a lot of 'take piranhas' but no squads of 3 or separate or a full squad of 5 sort of info. Any insight on this?

I only take 2. For tau I believe in msu. Multiplier small squads. I've seen people try to spam longer other armies and it doesn't work for tau. 5 piranhas are way too many points. Plus they take up slots that pathfinders use.
Also you need too learn about vehicle squadrons for maximum effectiveness. Immobilized results mean destroyed. Piranhas are early game and fragile. Be adhesive with them. If.they survive to the end the use them for objective contesting.

Awesome stuff, thanks for that advice, I just bought 2 of them (was intending on a 2-3 squadron eventually) I'll see how it goes.

One key thing that I suggest.
DO NOT put your Hammerhead's or Broadside's in the corner of the table!
I play a nids player and trust me, outflanking genestealers can destroy a hammerhead faster than you can say HAMMERHEAD DIE FROM OUTFLANK.
So beware of the outflank...

Hi guys!
I'm fresh Tau player and looking for "my" crisis suites equipment. I've recently read an article on the above mentioned Advanced Tau Tactica (really great resource) about weapons combinations. They say that it's better not to combine high and low AP in one team to prevent the opponent from the wound allocation game to negate some of your precious shots. So I'm going to have fusion+plasma team, burst+missile team, and may be tl missile + TA or flamer team...
What do you think about it?
And also what about kroots? What's better to field - several small squads or two large packs?

Kroot the larger the better.
Also for missiles on crisis suits take a pair. I normally taker a flamer for backup on these. For fusion plus plasma take a multi tracker.
Also place broadsides in area terrain. Free cover saves. With advanced stabilization you'll be able to avoid not making a shot.
If there are outflankers outflank the kroot our bubble wrap with them. The hammerhead should be moving 6 always.
