Well lemme paint up a squad first and then I will go from there... I do however want to keep the veteran's simple, yet the terminators and captains will be different

The Space Marine Codex details alot of small bits for the Ultramarines to denote ranks and veterancy.

I use the following.

Captains - Gold Trim, Gold Iron Halo, Bright Red Helmet. Lots of detail, feathers etc.

Vets - Yellow Trim, Yellow knee pads, Scrolls, Deathwatch pads (especially for sternguard).

Sgts - Yellow Trim. Lots of fur purlisses and trim.

I like your thought on Veterans being simple, less can be more when you are looking at those types. I really want to do my Bretonnian Marines now, all with Tabards and super bright decorative schemes.

Yeah i am tossing between blue and red as the veteran color.

However for my terminators and Captains or at least Masters of the various aspects of the chapter, will have the colors graying or losing sheen... to signify that they are older. Right now just working on painting up a squad to the right scheme.

This is what I was thinking for the Rite of Kulrain. It is comprised of five events. One event is the traditional passed down event that is repeated every time the competition is active. And the other four are divided between the two chapters to decide on what the events are and their scoring. Obviously for each designed event it would favour that chapter's chosen champion but they might be bested by the other in their own chapters game.

War Bear Chapter Events:
Timberfall- two trees of near equal quality and size are chosen, the objective is to clear it of all branches and fell it. Fastest wins. (order of clearing branches and felling the tree do not matter, however because the rule is not set to a specific order each chapter might feel that their way is right and that the other cheated).

Fortification challenge (needs work) - using the wood from create a fortification that can withstand a certain number of bolter rounds fired by the other champion (acting as a small attacking force) and still maintain integerity and safety from more rounds.

By tonight I should have finished half a squad to post up and will start to paint the War Bear Kulrain Champion

UPDATE
Updated codex rules and added section 'Masters of the Chapter'

Will expand on the Masters next and some unit photos finally! Warning Painting skills are not very good but gotta start somewhere.

Yes. I like this, I hadn't even thought of making it like a Lumberjack type affair.

How about some REDWOOD type species on you home planet, that grows like 30metres wide or something, so it is a trial of strength, stamina and endurance.

I would throw in some kind of Axe/ Hatchet/ Tomahawk challenge, like a 1,000 metre throw to a target or something.

I will concede that you are the holder, and I am able to challenge for the rite once every 10 years? So my Chapter has to nominate a champion.

Well at least my events would be lumberjack oriented. Do we want to keep it on my home planet or a 'neutral' site like Kulrain? Also it is an even split in competitions you have two, the war bears have two, at least that was what I was thinking. Unless whoever is 'hosting' all of the events are of the chapter's design.

Or this seems like a better idea.... the first competition is held on Kulrain... but whoever the victor is, the next Rite will be on the losers home, be it Thisdor or Manitou. So the victor must overcome all of the opposite chapter's events and chosen competitor to retain the title of Rite Champion.

I was thinking for the main tradition event it would be a hands only combat between the two champions.

And once the entire Rite is finished there is a feast.... at least on Thisdor, because the Bears like to eat.

Yup, sounds good. I was thinking Kulrain, because that's where the Two Captains (Gerheart and Tomahawk) settle their differences about who has seniority of command in a trial by feat of Arms? Sort of a trial in Hand to Hand combat like the Emperor and Ferrus Manus did.. Otherwise i think the Rite is named Kulrain in honour of the planet it 1st occured on, and since then it is on Thisdor or Manitou. It was an Honourable Fight, but it is interrupted mid-flow by an Assassination attempt by an Alpha Legion Strike Group who had being stirring up the trouble on Kulrain.. Where they both fight together back to back and defeat the Alpha Legion strike force. At the end they Vow that they must be united to defeat the Emperors Enemies and to remind them of this, every 10 years they would fight an Honourable Duel in a secure place not a Frontline Battlefield to honour the old Blood-feud that nearly destroyed both Companies and reaffirm their kinship and Brotherhood.

UPDATE:
Added model photos... sorry about the quality... the first two images are in the article.

Veteran Sergeant Decios

I decided to do silver as veteran status indicator and it is applied to the helmet, right shoulder, and aquila

First correct color scheme model. Tactical Sergeant.

Objective marker that I decided to make. Just need to finish the banner. Didn't think it would be appropriate in the article but a indicator and my improving painting skills.

Nice, consider that "copied" by me... Sorry been busy lately mate, will get on with the next chapters of our great saga in the next few weeks. Did you prime the mini's? If not I would recommend doing it, and just use a cheap can of Grey Autoprimer for cars ($8/£5 for a big can), it works wonders on models.

All the mini's are primed. But the objective marker is not at all... so when i am completely done with it I'm gonna seal it up. But i am getting an interesting effect with it not being primed, the silver eagle on top is wearing down showing the bare plastic underneath and looks like actual wear. Not exactly sure if I'm going to keep it that way or not.

Oh and don't worry man its fine. I have been just as busy and haven't really done large amounts of work on the chapter either.
