From what I understand the latest books describe them as coal-black. Like, unnaturally black. Not the interpretation I prefer personally. But who knows maybe the people of Nocturne are naturally dark skinned too.
As an argument for them to be jet black, it is said that their appearance alone has been enough to scare planets in line. I doubt even the imperium's citizens are so milk-toast that they get that uncomfortable when a couple of brothas show up.
On the other hand I've heard them being partially inspired by John Henry, which makes sense given their dark skin, fondness for hammers and working class ethics. It just seems like gw's taste for hyperbole to make them obsidian

My information is probably dated, but I thought it was obsidion black with glowing red eyes, and that was the reason for being able to scare the citizens back in line...

At some times it is black as in jet-black, at others it has been African black. I go with the onyx black because I like it better (it makes the eyes stand out more) but that's just me. I have been accused of racism based on my paint scheme, however.
Really, its only racist if you paint the lips red or white! If you don't catch my meaning (I'm sure you do ) then google "blackface".

Yeah, actual black makes them look like
A-stereotypes (good thing most marines these days seem to wear respirators, so you don't see their giant red lips)
B- stone people
C- reptile people
I can think of various mammals with brown or grey skin, but black is something pretty strange.
Polar bears and other artic mammals, black skin is very common in mammals that live around the north pole.

I know, but I'm a rather vocal opponent of the ridiculous jet black skin and glowing eyes.
Frost giant grey would have seemed less like a PC cop out. Or committing to painting Sallies as Africano marines with orange hair, realistic diversity combined with 40k ridiculosity.
