...why would I make my Templars successors of the Dark Angels?

Take a look at the DA codex. It gives ideas on alternative color scheme for successor chapters, and tells you it's ok to come up with you own colors in case you want to use Dark Angels rules but not their colors.

Why stick with an established chapter? Create an original color scheme and a unique or recolored chapter icon, and use the models for whichever Marine codex you feel like playing at the time.

The nice thing is that the DA and BT add-on bits all sort of fit the same general "knightly order" feel. Mixing-and-matching them would probably create a nice looking army, and keep the flexibility of being able to use whichever list works.

Black Templars, but I'm surprised that GK's aren't on the list. You know, since they have, like, knights in the name. Have him think about that option.

I agree, My DA are not painted in the traditional color shceme DA green, green and boltgun metal for me, but I use them as regular marines since the current DA book came out, my termies are still death wing though. Somes times if I am in the mood to use azrial I play them as DA. Somes times when my buddy wants to play test his adepticon lists they have been known to be SW or BA. Its all good, remember the "most improtant rull" have fun. So if you want DA bodies with GK arms, SW heads and using BT rules go for it
