Also with ebay there is the option for used models. They are much cheaper than new models and with paint-stripping or a few replacement bits you can make them look really good.

As others have already stated, eBay is a really good place to buy models at discount prices. Right now I have three Sentinels, five Chimeras, one Basilisk, thirty Steel Legion troops, six SL plasma troops, six SL grenade launcher troops, six SL heavy weapons teams, and one Commissar Yarrick. I only bought one of those Chimeras from the store; the three sentinels I picked up from an auction and the rest of the army came from another. I forget exactly how much it cost, but I crunched the numbers after the purchase and found that trying to buy all of that new probably would have run me 1.5 to 2 times what I paid.

I used to buy retail, but now almost everything I get through eBay. Just picked up 2 brand new Rhinos for the price I would have bought picked up one at from GW. And 2 Forgeworld Dreads for 50% off. Also great for little bitz here and there that you might need or have lost or damaged.
It saves you a tremendous amount of money even with just a little patience.

There are still plenty of decent deals out there, but the great deals are few and far between.
I haven't been ripped off and have a decent amount of bits and units from Ebay.
I agree with this statement far more strongly than the first few.
