I see recruiters buying high school kids lunch and then filling their heads with BS. It really helps that our economy blows, there are no jobs out there, so go to war war a few years, if you make it back then you can go to school, and we promise to pay for it all, but that never really happens. Then you can try and get a job but there still won't be any, and you are welcome to come back in and die for your country.

GW says in the future there is only war, so how long have we been in the future now?

Well, as a vet, husband of a deployed soldier, father to an infantryman and an ROTC cadet who can't wait to graduate and get on active duty, buddies to plenty of vets and active troops and folks with kids in the service, I consider your feelings as misguided.

that is an odd statement. they are my feelings, just because they aren't yours does not make them misguided. IMO we haven't been in a military conflict or war to "protect America" since we fought the British. politics god and war are all bad conversations, so I will just say thanks for your service. and be gone

Contrary to what you have been taught, just because one feels something doesn't make it correct or valid.

This is currently the most inaccurate thing I have ever read on Dakka. Congratulations.

Misguided means based on error. The fact that you consider troops dying as 'senseless death', the fact that your impression of recruiters and those they recruit is not based on reality are both clear indicators your feelings are indeed based on error, or misguided. You have seemingly bought into the soldiers as victims meme which folks besides myself have disputed, folks who I am guessing have more experience in dealing with and being the soldiers you feel are victims. So yes, I stand by my comment.

My father joined to serve his country.
My uncle joined to serve his country.
My parent's next door neighbor joined to serve his country.
I joined to serve my country.
My cousin joined to serve his country.
A friend recently shipped out MCRD San Diego as 0311 to serve his country.
Another friend is a veteran from Iraq who is one of the 40,000 casualties. He was hit by an ID and suffered internal damage. He joined to serve his country.

Yeah, some join because they need a job, but the US military is at most 5 milling strong, out of what, 150 million? For the most part it takes a unique kind of person to join and most do it out of a sense of duty, not because they got BSed by a recruiter.

If you're ignorant of the military it's probably best to keep your mouth shut.

42 more people have been murdered in Chicago over a 4 year period than have been lost in the entire war on the U.S. side.

They volunteered to go die over there, people are murdered involuntarily every day in my city.

I don't feel sorry for any of our soldiers, at all. I feel sorry for the inner city youths forced into a life of crime to survive.

Though, I was quite touched by that video of the dog welcoming that soldier home. I have a soft spot for animals

If the reason behind the death, or the "sense", is not accepted as legitimate then its likely that the person doing the considering would believe the death of soldiers to be senseless.

It may shock some to realize this, but experience can be both misleading and illustrative.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

I don't have the numbers or studies at hand, but sadly most of the ones who come from that environment into the military simply bring it with them, and end up in Leavenworth. Not all of them end up badly, but most do.

There are a lot of thugs in the military, especially the Army. I've had more close calls playing basketball at military gyms than I've ever had playing in a civilian area. The last time I played on post I was like 16, what kind of loser tries to take a swing at a 16 year old? ffs

Nope, just pointing out the fact that while some people join the military to get away from whatever lifestyle they were in, sometimes there are those who'd prefer to bring their old lifestyle in to the military and ultimately harms whichever branch they happen to join.

I can confirm this. I was in the royal marines for ten years and i am an out and out hooligan. I was a ruffian when i was in nappies and it progressed from there.
