I'm another vet from way back in 1989. Its hard to describe the feeling when 40k (RT) first appeared. Imagine the White Dwarf covering citadel fantasy and other manufacturer's products. Then imagine the first adverts for RT appearing then(vets, was it issue 93?) 40k exploding into life! Page upon page of this universe, and it was a case of;WOW! Now when you get down to it these early marine kits were fairly basic; the back pack was always a bit of a mystery on how to fix on(no peg). But there was just something about them. To this day I say that the SMs represent all that is 40k. I do have a few other other armies but I always return to the marines.

Compared to some of the guys here, im quite new to the hobby, etc...
Been collecting/painting/playing marines (and other armies now) since 08. The reason I like them, honestly when I was in Iraq and all I had access to was the GW website, and I had models to drool over.. the one faction that I could say (at the time) that I liked their ENTIRE line of minis, was the Marines. Everything from named characters to LotD, to Land Raiders and everything in between, when I saw them online I just knew that I wanted to make an army of them.

99 featured the first chaos 40k stuff... so 93 sounds about right

People say theyre "generic" or "all the same" but actually, seeing as they come from pretty much the entire galay there's a lot of variety and opportunities for customisation. You can have Knightly ones, Greek style ones, Mongolian ones, Stealthy ones, Firey ones, Smash-it-with-tanks ones... the list goes on. There's so much variability you can't really make a wring decision.

Implacable Black Templar Initiate

I like their back story and to me they seem to be the most tacticaly sound army, that said I first played them becouse I wanted an army that could shoot but wasn't afraid of close combat.

I play Space Marines because. Aesthetically I like them. The corvus, maximus armor. The "Rank and file" Marine helmets are just so blah. Now, Space Wolves seldomly wear helmets. Aside from the punky Spiked and mohawk cuts. You had very Nordic styled heads estionally making a army of Space Vikings.
They also have a vivid fluff that reads like a Mythology or Folklore and their approach and views are right up my alley.

A friend of mine got me into the game back at the beginning of 4th and they just seemed awesome. Just the idea of supersoldiers that could walk through gunfire and just shrug it off like nothing. Plus I loved the dreadnought models.
