Should starting a thread containing only a link to another site be allowed?
No, it adds zero actual content to dakka and should be deleted as spam.
Yes, it provides possibly valuable content elsewhere and is appropriate.
Don't care either way.
Don't care either way but it should be labelled as only a link in the title.

What I am saying is that the idea that there is no content is not up for debate. This is not at this moment against the rules. I will certainly inform you by posting in this thread if that changes.

For now: When responding to an OP that is just a link, discuss the content linked or move along. Complaining about the format is besides the point. It's off-topic if done politely and flaming if done rudely. If you want to repost some part of it, especially pics, feel free to do so but there is no need to nag or harass the OP.

Thanks.

Im with Warboss on this one although maybe not as vehemently.

I feel between him and Kan they've covered most of my feelings although Manchu has put together a good rebuttle/POV.

Perhaps we can move towards possible solutions rather then the internals of the debate:

A. If you post a blog you must put at least a good size (vague I know but its a start) teaser in the dakka post so people can get a feel for it. Perhaps a summary of your views/batrep.

B. Have a link to your blog but copy/paste all of the text from it (use quote form if you like). I am a complete technophobe but even I know this takes minimal formatting changes.

C. Create a sticked topic in the batrep/discussion forums where all blog links are posted. Discussion can happen within that post or others can start a new thread to continue the debate (would this get out of hand with offshoots?).

D. Allow blog posts but clearly lable them in the title as such so people know what they are getting (or not as the case maybe!).

E. Simply disallow blog links.

F. Any other viable alternative.

Note: its not only batreps that this gets covered under, peoples "blog opinions" posts are also becomming more common.

By 1-irt: Still as long as Hissy keeps showing up this is one of the most entertaining threads ever.

A few pictures is always nice, but I don't object to links.

I'd be fine with either a meaty preview (as described in my earlier posts) in the OP's post or simply mandatory labelling of the thread as a blog/link [blog] ala the swap shop. As strongly as I feel on the subject, I'm fine with people doing what this gent ultimately did.
