Thank you both luna and Tronz for the information you have provided. I can totally see with Toys'r'us gone that GW wouldn't want to stick around in that deadzone. I guess the rent or lease agreement in the rest of metrotown or metropolis was to much for them.\

If you look around the skytrain lines (both expo and mellinum lines) there are much better areas then the burnaby?new west area. I wound about brentwood? It has a nice station there, it's not a rough area like edmonds is, and a good bus loop there, it's right off the highway #1 and hastings....plus the lougheed highway. It just seems like another lost oppertunity for GW in Vancouver.

I could see why they wanted to move out of Gastown in the late 90's (skidrow area) as it changed from drinking/drunks/ to crack junkies and hookers....mmm hookers agahgahygahagha

Ahhh also I see the store hours are from 12noon-9pm I guess they wanted a store with a outside door and not be bound by opening when the mall opens....-facepalms myself-

There was a..... "prime" area around New west sky train station. ( if im not mistaken there was 2 hobby game stores near that area )
its also 3 mins away from Douglas college. Almost everything dictates choosing that place if not for the druggies and hookers -_-

honestly this current High Gate location.... it wouldn't last long, it has no values.

Well,to be fair they are really changing that area. It used to be drugs and hookers as soon as your stepped off the skytrain, but with the two towers that have gone up around there, and the fact they are knocking down whole city blocks and rebuilding them, might mean a change for the area.

Also wasn't it chaos games and forsaken games? I know rick ran forsaken but I don't know if it's still open. That place had hella space. One huge store with lots of tables and space for people. But as most games store I think it turned more into a 'club' then a business. And thats the probelm with FLGS, you have to manage it like a business but has the atmosphere of a club. That is one hard arse balance.

I agree with you though. The store isn't going to make money once the novelity wears off. It's to hard to get to, and it's to far from the west end...which means the kids with money. . I just hope this isn't GW's idea of ' well we tried but the store went undered...to bad Vancouver...go to park royal...since we closed down the Richmond and Surrey stores.

The hooker and druggy place is New West Minster station.

High Gate ( the current store to be ) is filled with old retired people, and low income apartment area :<

They have really cleaned up around New West station. they are knocking down whole city blocks to put up new construction (condo's or highrises) They have built two new high rises right on top of new west station.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear.

Around Edmonds station used to be a really rough area also. Kingsway and edmonds also used to be 'Hooker row' if you kept on going down kingsway into new west ( past the llumberland yard) Sighs, it's been so many years since ive been around that area tho other then for a few months work.

I guess we will all just have to wait and see. Personally I will continue supporting Strategies as much as I can. It's a great store, Darren's a good manager and I think he does a very good job of balancing the club/business aspect of it. As a gamer, there are things that I would like to see change, but that may not be what's best for his business.

The Highgate Village location was a bit of a surprise when GW announced it. It's further out into the valley and when I spoke with the Metrotown staff prior to the shutdown, they were looking at locations in their immediate vicinity. For me, I'm 30 and I own a car, so getting there isn't the problem, but it's not exactly convenient. I think GW would be hard pressed to not have at least 2 locations in the Vancouver area though, given the size of the community here, but business decisions don't always make sense. Only time will tell if they can be profitable and successful.

There are no FLGS in the downtown area that support GW products. There is a hobby shop in the Tinseltown mall in Gastown, but I will not do business there. When they carried GW product and I was shopping there, all the owner did was complain about GW players not buying anything and just playing. All this while I'm holding a hundred dollars worth of product in my hand, waiting to pay. My friends that play Warmahordes go there occasionally and each time they are asked if they bought their product there before they'll be allowed to play. Again, they will not see business from me, period.

Anyways, this isn't really intended to be a "gak on GW for their bad location" thread, but whatever floats your boat.

Iagree with you about Darrenn, he's a great guy and manager. I haven't been there in quite a while but when I walked in he said hello mike and asked me if I needed any new BL books as he knows I like the BL books. Thats a damn good manager. I'm glad that you enjoyed supporting his store.

This really isn't 'gak on gw' it's just a two people talking about the new location of the store after almost a year long hiatius. And that we both think there could be better locations as you yourself do. Maybe I should start a new thread about that if you don't think it's approperate for this one.

It has been nice though talking with other gamers in the lowermainland. It's always nice to chat with people in your hometown and see what their take on things are. =o]

No painted models? What makes a person "Undesirable" if they dont have a fully painted army? Sure all the games will look better, but that keeps out newer wargamers because they dont have a fully painted army (and their army will spend more time on the shelf then actually playing) Its what they spent their money for I assume...TO PLAY! That's a really stupid rule I'm afraid

Just an FYI for everyone, Strategies(On Main St in Vancouver) is having a 200 point Kill Team event on Saturday November 19th - Here's the information:

November Saturday 19th Miniature Game Day 12pm-5:30pm Warhammer 40,000 (Kill Team)
Details: You will need a painted 200 point force. We will be using the Kill Team rules. Never played kill team? Ask staff for details. Bring your gaming supplies IE rulebooks, tokens, dice etc et

@ Mike - No worries here, that wasn't meant as a criticism to anyone at all, more a general comment. I completely agree with you about the local gamers. The community here in Vancouver seems really fractured and disconnected, it's nice to know there are like minds out there. And you're absolutely right about the new GW the location is terrible.

@ Simon - It's not that someone is undesirable to play with when they have unpainted models ( I have about 1500 points of painted stuff and about 10000 points unpainted...) but a lot of 'Ard Boys and excessively competitive people don't ever bother to paint their models. I believe the intention is to encourage people to take part in the whole hobby, not just how you can ROFLPWN everyone you face. Also stores like this don't just sell models and glue. This rule encourages his customers to buy more stuff, which is good for business, if the business thrives, the community continues to have a great place to play.

Excellent post. =o] If your FLGS thrives it can only meen good things for the local gaming group/community.

As you said the gaming community is very fractured around here. I personally would like to help somehow so what I am thinking about doing is making a demo table for Ambush Valley (vietnam suppliment for the Ambush Alley Game system Force on Force) and take it around to the different stores and Cons and demo it for people. As the system isn't dependent on 'buying Company X's figgies to play with the game' alot of different stores that sell a wide variety of model kits and figgies shouldn't have a problem with it as hopefully it will help sell stock that they sell ie 1/72 scale model kits and 20mm figgies, 15mm figgies etc.

As long as there is a tangable outcome ( they sell more stock) then I don't see a problem with it. As long as I don't step on established peoples toes I believe it should be all good. =o]

Hey Mike, sounds interesting. The only ranges I own at this point are 40k and a Menoth boxed set for Warmachine. It'd be cool to check it out. A friend of mine is getting into Dystopian wars and FoW as well, so I might end up with one of those eventually, but I'd be interested in checking it out at some point.

Also I love the burnaby location... not in a mall so it's not a drop off babysitting center... plus it's about 10 minutes from my home

I live in the West End, so getting out to Langley is a whole day investment. I have seen and heard great things, but the soonest I will be going out there is in February. They will hosting Matheiu Fontaine's masterclass painting course then, but I doubt that I will be playing as it's 20 hours of instruction over 2 days...

I was in the new store on Monday and it wasn't bad. Still a few kids who mouth machine gun and rocket noises while they play, but definitely nothing like the daycare that it used to be.

And personally getting to richmond is a chore for me. Lots of parking at the new burnaby store. What army do you play gateway?

I think imperial hobbies is more of a phone in and book and they will make a spot for you, or so I was told when I asked.

I play a Space Marine army, which if I add all my models together is barely 1250 points, i'm quite new to this game

Can you make it to Langley from Richmond without taking any highways?

You can get to Langley by avoiding the highways, but it would be very slow. The fastest is to take the Fraser Highway as far as I know. Imperial Hobbies is the best hobby shop I have ever been in as far as hobby stuff is concerned, but I didn't see much room for gaming tables. They have everything from MTG to comic books to traditional model airplanes and tanks. The manager is quite good too.

one should never play 40k inside of a GW store, and in response to Tronzors ealrier post yes the hobby will survive through us the community buying stuff. But i don't believe spending is what hurts the warhammer community size the most at this point it is stuck up rules such as having fully painted armies, and having groups unwilling to teach new players the rules and help them enjoy the game, and alternatively for some people it is most about the gameplay that interest them and the hobby is secondary just throwing it out there

good store been open for a while is Hourglass comics in port moody decent selection and will order anything you want they have by-weekly 40k games on weekends im pretty sure but i usually play with my friends at my house so i never checked it out, specificaly they carry lots of space marines and orks and have a passable selection of the other armies also they still have a few pewter models in stock so if your trying to get some check them out quick

If anyone still cruises here Im looking for games of any size. I can commute within reason and am located in new west. Im NOT a power gamer and am looking for someone that isnt into playing to win. I basiclly just wanna push models around since I spent so long painting and assembling them. I am also looking for more of a mature gamer if your 40 and act 14 then its not gonna work, but if your 16 and act 20 then we should be good. We can try gamiing at a local store and if all goes good then Id like it to continue either at any store or at someone's house. Resond here or email at gecko_987@hotmail.com. thanks

You just missed the monthly session, but there are quite a few of us that play 40k at Trumpeters (held at the Bonsor Centre in Burnaby - close to the Metrotown Skytrain) on a Friday night.

Next meeting is December 7th:

We meet in the upstairs bit facing the Skytrain, and kick off at about 6:30

Nope, just rock up and play! There is a $6 admission free to cover the room hire, but if you pay for what they call the "Full meal deal" for $55 you don't have to pay admission monthly and you get free entrance to our annual convention - which is a good day out and works out at quite a saving.

I've never seen anyone play Warmahordes there, but there are lots of historical games to play (might be FoW). There are also other sci-fi game sand such, but there's a hard core of about 8-12 of us 40kers too.

Ya, the metrotown location closed because the metrotown management there has been converting that side of the mall to a fashion wing for a couple years. I used to work in that area and our store was forced out by the management when our lease came up. They wanted way more money for a store in that wing if you weren’t a clothing store. We then moved to the other side of the mall. The company I worked for wasn’t small either, one of the largest in Canada. I heard they did the same with most of the non clothing stores in that area of the mall.

Only had great experiences at the new highgate location though.
