Maybe GW are just getting much smarter and have started playing a bluffing game, it will actually be something surprising like Jervis Johnson's retirement...

Where have you been though most of 5th edition?
Forgive my noobishness, but is it not true that Marines and Chaos Marines play completely differently? Sure they both have marine in the title, but they are totally different armies mechanically.
Or am I wrong?
I don't have experience playing either, I only play Orks.

Yes and no.
They have different options in the codex, but they have the same staline, same armour, same basic weapons..
Marines vs Marines (even if one is spiky and arguably more pychotic) would be dull.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Or maybe Chaos marines and Eldar?
My guess would be CSM vs IG. While IG is still one of the best codices out there, 6th edition will likely turn vehicle heavy armies on their head... Time to rewrite the rules for GW's 2nd favorite army.

If I were just getting started in the hobby I wouldn't want a box with lots of the same stuff...

That is pretty much what two-thirds of all the tournament games posted in the batreps section are, so I'm not sure most would take issue with it...

besides, if it was a certain type of marine (ie. soley thousand sons, etc.) You'd actually have a pretty decent time, just needs some fluff behind it.

Well if you're talking about rumors, then therer's the one we've all heard about Ultramarines not being the ones for the starter. If it was a specific chapter, say Dark Angels *coughcough*, against the new rumored codex to coincide with 6th edition Chaos Legions, which would feature incredibly different kinds of marines.
I could potentially see a terminators, bikes, and a land speeder, going against a daemon prince, some berserkers, and whatever other legion they would want.

i've definitely heard that there will be new plague bearers in the basic set, and it has something to do with the type of mission you would be playing, honest bet i would bank chaos is guaranteed seeing how they are also planning on the release of new chaos codex(or two) within a close time frame.
