Here's a link to a the tournament software I mentioned:

http://www.tabletoptournaments.net/t3_goepp.php

The "Goettinger Pairing Programm" (abbr. GoePP) is a Windows-software, that allows a comfortable administration of your running tournament. Its main use is the creation of the player pairings based on the Swiss System. There a lots of options to configure the process. You can for example activate that one player won't play against his own army/faction or against a player he already battled.

In addition to this core feature the GoePP supports the handling of the gaming rounds with a couple of handy prints (like current pairings or standings etc).

The issue with seeding 40K events, is a large population of 40K players are not ranked and will never be ranked.
So the best player in the field of any given event could be unranked, and still get a "bunny" run .. even a potentially easier one.

While the rest of the ranked players have a harder road and eliminate one another making it actually easier for someone to skate.

40k is not chess or magic. While it might be possible to run ranked 40K events locally within a club or store league it is a much harder task to do so on a regional or national scale.

Not impossible, but not sure the outcome will produce "better" results for the effort expended.

muwhe, I think you are correct as regards the U.S. However, Ireland and a few other European countries have nicely integrated tournament calenders/ranking criteria. Ireland (north+south) is the size of Maine, roughly, and has a population of five million. It's a wargamer's utopia.

Muwhe - they will become ranked the first time they play in a rankings tourhament, so as said its an issue once, not a potential issue every time.

The problem here is that if the player does not go onto Rankings HQ there is no defintive link made between multiple tournaments. For instance, if you're a John Smith the system treats each John Smith as a separate person until the player logs on and "claims" his results ...

Sure, then they might not play for a year or more in a ranking event. Or they might play as William Harris in one event, Will Harris in the next etc.. My point is the percentage of players "ranked" for any event will generally be small unless the event requires folks to have an account, a ranking, and can provide that as part of the signup process.

We ran for a long time a pretty successful Tourney Tracker system in Illinois that while was not a true ranking system it tracked events and players pretty well for a couple years. But tracking players locally is one thing tracking them across the US is another matter.

I got zero issues with a ranking system. In fact it's great for folks to be able to see themselves, keep track of events and records. I'm a fan of the Ranking HQ guys. I just don't think seeding by ranking given the state of 40K in the US creates any better results, then a random pairings for the first round.
