wow, thanks Mwnciboo... thats really nice for you to say... (haha kinda stunned me!)
If anything has given me the motivation to make these models the best I've ever done (which wasnt hard considering my previous models), its the look that my mate will have on his face . I've always liked making things for others, those I know especially, and I hope he wil be as proud of these as I am
ok, that was way too positive... time for self-deprication! (I am british after all)

Nice, really like the Bolter sights. Any chance of quick talk through of how you did the lens effects on the Bolters?

Update: Heyo! Ok, so first I'll answer Mwnciboos queston.
Essentially... I just stole the idea from a white dwarf. I know theres much dispute about the state of white dwarfs recently, however, I love the painting sections, because they give great tips.
In particular, there is one white dwarf.... from October 2010, wow thats a long time ago, that covers the painting of "Prince Althran". It was the WD that came out around the time of the new High elf codex I believe.
The guide to paint him covers three sections I hope to make use of again and again (already have in fact!). Faces, gems and free hand. For this reason I recommend you pick it up, I'd say it was worth it.
I have a natural luckiness for mixing colours that the magazine recommends, plus a few of my own, to create half decent faces that are wholly unique (for good or bad).
In terms of gems, I'm not as skilled, however, I basically copy what the magazine does for gems and put it on the lenses, add some gloss, and that usually looks ok. Ok, enough blabber, I'll tell you what I did now .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colours: Mordian blue, Ice blue, Skull white, Chaos Black ----------------------- Note: (will try to find some pictures to illustrate the below)
1) Start with a coat of mordian blue over the whole lense.
2) take thinned down chaos black and apply it to the top part of the lense in an oval pattern. Make sure to keep the black away from the edge of the lense, apart from the very top and slightly to one side. (your preference which/depends where the light is coming from)
3) Again use the thinned chaose black to create a thin line black line at the bottom of the gem. Make sure that the line follows the curve of the gem, always staying away from the edge. (this would be much better with pictures)
4) Mix together Ice blue and Mordian blue, in a ratio of 1:1 (thought I'm not sure about this ratio and its probably better to experiment)(plus I always believe that no matter how you read something, add your own touch/colour/ratio to make it personal).
5) add the mix over the previously painted mordian blue, leaving the blue closest to the black section at the top their original colours. However make sure to hit the edges of the gem and get as close to the black semicircle line at the bottom, without going over the black.
6) Make the above mix a 3:1 ratio and do the same again, leaving more untouched.
7) Do the same again with a pure Ice blue mix. This time only hit the edges and the line just above the bottomw black section
8) Apply pure skull white around the edge, leaving a few gaps, and a dot of white just above the middle of the black line.
Phew, thats the best I can explain without pictures. AS said, will try to find some, or just make a random gem myself and post it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, now for the real post! Updates!
I've finished making the next five bases, just paint left to be applied.
First base: The sergeant will be on this outcrop, with various weapons. Hopefully I can get him to look suitably heroic!
Second Base: This base isn't actually finished on film. I have since drilled a hole in the metal bit where my bolt fell off. Also there will be a firey exhaust coming from the oil pipe.
Third Base: Following on from the story idea, into the mechanicus building they go!
Fourth Base: Signs of trouble ahead! A destroyed skull-probe?
Fifth Base: Unfortunately I cant really model a conclusion onto bases. Plus, there never will be one! Always more enemies to fight!
ok, so there are the bases. Have at it!

Nice bases, thanks for the piece on lenses. I got a bit confused but phoned a friend and he dug out the WD and said I can borrow it off him.

Update, I've been a bit demotivated recently, but have pledged to finish the second set of bases (almost done) and at least assemble and undercoat the guys before the 19th.
Hopefully I'll have more on here soon.

Thanks Zenarius! Good timing on your part as the bases are now done. Although, I'm not sure about them
What I wanted was to tell the story as they went to the aid of a mechanicum building... or something of the sort, however the three bases in the building seem... out of place with the rest of the unit. I'm not sure, tell me what you think please!
Oh also, what probably isnt visible is the marbling effect in the stone, but just note its not plain yellow stone
First base, the sergeants outcrop, which he can stand on and look all heroic.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next the base with the oil pipe that has just burst into flame, lit from a stray bullet. I created the effect by taking an armorcast Rocket launcher upgrade and just glueing it in. The flame effect was painted on with many layers of dry blending.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next is the first base into the building with some part of the door still showing, think big aircraft hanger style doors.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fourth is the base that is 'connected' to the third by the mechanicum symbol on the floor, also there is a destroyed skull probe.... somethings afoot here!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last is the base that isnt finished... I need to position a marine on it before I add the oil spill coming from his bionic leg.
So what do you think? Do you agree that it looks a little odd? or am I being over analytic?
thanks!

Merry Christmas Everyone!
I gave the marines to my mate and he really enjoyed them, so I'm very happy about that. We don't play much so he was fine with me taking them back to finish the squad off and get a picture as a whole.
After New Year I will be either starting a new blog or just cramming more stuff in this one. I will be painting up some terrain for us to use. Most likely it will be at the sedate pace you are used to though, so don't get too excited.
What do you think? Post terrain here or in new blog?
also, and again, Meryy Christmas!

Hah, I talked about a sedate pace! How slow can I go!
Well I took a break after new years and one thing lead to another and I was visitng my mate again with no real progress on the marines, for shame...
The thing that was holding me back was that I wasn't looking forward to the mass customisation that I'd agreed with myself to do, however I finally completed it and have basecoated all the marines in black. (This update is a little late too as I've started work on painting the men, that will come at a later date though)
So without further ado, I give you
------------------------------------------------------
Sergeant!
With all his weapon options
Bolt pistol and chainsword
Storm bolter and powerfist
Plasma Pistol and Power sword (this is the weapon my mate wanted the Iron hands shoulder pad on, the rest have basic pads)
Combi-plasma and chainsword (This weapon is from chapterhouse and can be fitted with any of the combi's, though getting them to stay on is a pain)
and finally, Bolter and chainsword
------------------------------------------------------
Next up are three normal marines with bolters.
Marine holding a chapter relic/mechanicum vial
Marine injured in his bionic leg
Marine dubbed Fenix
------------------------------------------------------
And last we have the heavy weapons dude, probably the most difficult in terms of magnetisation... but hopefully worth it.
With Heavy bolter
With Multi-melta
With Missile Launcher
With Lascannon
With Plasma Cannon
and finally with just a bolter, just in case
Right thats enough images for now.
Again sorry for the absence, hopefully I'll have some updates for you soon!

Hello! Just a small reply so you know I'm not dead. Unlike my painting skills... taking me so long to paint!
Firstly the marines are all coming along nicely, if a little dusty from the time in between painting sessions, however I do have updates on a vial that one of them is carrying and the brain head of another marine.
First the vial should be self explanatory; holy relic of some kind. Not sure I'm completely happy with it, but it'll do.
Second the top of my heavy weapons guys head, tried to do some kind of lightning playing over his metallic brain, little bit small for the details but it looks ok.
hopefully I'll have more for you soon!

Just off on holiday and I managed to get two more marines finished before I go, almost got a third, however it needs some OSL on it to be finished.
Before I post the men I must stress I am fairly irritated as the purity seal I used to safeguard the men was... old and has made them look particularly wintery. Hopefully it wont ruin the effect too much and I managed to touch up some places post seal to make it look better, but rather annoyed :(
So, two marines, first guy with vial/relic/healing potion
Think he looks pretty good, but would like you opinions! Thats what truly matters
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next be a marine injured in his bionic leg by some sort of projectile and he's leaking oil!
so what do you think? I'm off to pack and go to sleep, cya soon!

Hello again, I'm not trying to resurrect this thread as I realise I'm not cut out for vast quantities of updates, however I would like to post the final squad for a measure of closure.
I completed the squad about half a year ago and finally delivered them unto my friend who was happy, this making it all worth while in the end.
So to cut a long story short, here are my.. *cough* his marines.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok First off we have the final normal marine
I had to redo almost the entire paint job due to frosting... but hes done and thats the end of it!
Next is the Sergeant;
Naked
and with assorted magnetised weaponry
Finally its the Devastator portion of the Troop;
Naked
and with assorted magnetised weaponry
And finally the whole squad together!!
For those that followed the original posts, sorry for taking so long to post up new information, but thank you very much for all your kind words and advice.
I hope that my squad gives some of you ideas to take painting/modelling further.
Finally a big thankyou to Mwnciboo specifically, for all his help and back and forth between our Iron Hands armies.
Adieu!
